As of today, the best source I could find is their "About Us" page, where it says they have been in business since 1985.

(They also had a couple of articles on their site, but I could only find the one from 2024, so I cannot vouch for how well it's kept up to date. The company seems to have changed quite a bit over the past few years.) Here is what I found on their About Us page.

Element, Marriott, Park Inn by Radisson, Residence Inn and. Renaissance brands. So the answer is that Best Western is a subdivision/subsidiary of the Westin brand. In 2024, Best Western had 2,500 properties in 100 countries.
