What is a VPN certificate used for?

VPN certificates are required for secure communication.

The server you're accessing is the only part of the internet that can see your real IP address, which is what makes an encrypted connection secure. This is why your internet service provider (ISP) also needs to know your real IP address.

For example, if you want to stream live videos from YouTube to your TV or connect to your favourite social media website, you would need your internet service provider to allow you to connect to a specific server in the UK (the streaming server) using your IP address, which would help ensure your videos or live stream is streamed and received by the right people on the right platform. VPN certificates are issued by Certificate Authorities (CAs), and each CA is known to issue certain types of certificates. The most common type of certificate issued by a CA is a public certificate, also known as a domain validation certificate.

When your browser requests a certificate, the server you are trying to access provides the exact public certificate you need for secure communication. If the public certificate being provided by the server doesn't match the one your browser has already stored in its cache, the certificate won't be accepted. This is because the public certificate issued by the server you're accessing isn't stored in your browser's cache, meaning it couldn't be validated.

You can verify if your browser is accepting the certificate by entering the URL of the website and clicking View Certificate. Your browser will then show you which certificate to use.

Your browser will not accept any certificates not provided by a site you try to access. However, you could accidentally get a certificate error from an unrelated site. The most common cause is that your browser may have cached certificates from previous visits, which are no longer valid. Simply clearing your browser's cache (clearing everything but your cookies) usually gets rid of these errors.

Most web servers will always provide their domain-validated certificates if you request them, even if it does not have the exact domain you're accessing. This is because web servers don't know what certificates you currently have stored in your browser's cache.

If a website doesn't provide a domain-validated certificate for whatever reason, your browser might still automatically attempt to validate the certificate if it knows where it is being accessed from.

What is the certificate issue on NordVPN?

By following the instructions on how to create an account, you will be able to get a free NordVPN certificate.

When you create the account, a welcome email will arrive with the code (and it can be checked in the FAQ). With that code, you can add up to 8 connections. If you have an active subscription, the number of connections is reduced to 4.

Note that you must complete the email login process in order to receive the code in your inbox. This includes an automated check of your email address so make sure to add all email addresses you use for NordVPN to your email accounts. A common practice is to give more than one address to different providers.

What's more, you can create a NordVPN account without subscribing to their VPN service. You can do this if you follow the procedure in How to Create a NordVPN Account Without a Subscription? However, if you do this, we suggest that you add a trial subscription to get access to our 30-days free VPN service. You will still receive a free NordVPN certificate when creating an account without subscribing to NordVPN.

It's a fair question to ask any VPN service, but one that NordVPN is more than capable of answering.

The company was founded by a team of industry veterans and is a specialist in providing secure and anonymous connections, with no data retention.

I've been using NordVPN for a few months now, and I've found it to be a really reliable service, offering a lot of value for money. It's also easy to use, and doesn't have much of a learning curve.

How Does NordVPN Work? NordVPN provides a range of server locations across the globe, from Canada to the USA to Europe and Africa. When you connect to NordVPN, you choose which country you want to connect to, and then your traffic is routed through that country, encrypting the connection between your device and the NordVPN server in that location. This means that no one can see or read your traffic, unless they have access to that specific server.

All the servers are powered by a mix of Windows and Linux, and the company claims this gives them the fastest and most stable connections. NordVPN uses the OpenVPN protocol to make sure that your traffic is encrypted, and that there's no data being retained on the company's servers.

Another feature is that NordVPN provides multiple protocols, allowing you to use OpenVPN, IKEv2, and TLS/SSL. IKEv2 is a newer protocol than OpenVPN, and it's often referred to as 'tunnel mode' because it's used for tunneling - it's like using a tunnel to get from one location to another. TLS/SSL is typically used for web browsing and HTTPS connections, for example. This helps you to remain secure while browsing the internet.

Does NordVPN have enough server locations? As you would expect, NordVPN has more than 1,000 servers in over 40 countries around the world. While not every country is covered, the company has servers in some of the biggest countries, including the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, India and Japan.
