What is proxy port 8080?
If you think there's just one of them, you have a serious misconception. They're the port of all ports, and every system that has something to hide is running a proxy on it. Why should we care about those anyway? Well, because they control how data passes through them, and can be used to attack your network, compromise your machines, or steal your money.
In my case, I was recently in a situation where I ended up talking to someone from our web hosting company on port 80, on port 22 over SSH (so no worries about key exchange), and even over Skype. These systems were probably compromised, so what should have been a secure connection turned out not to be the case at all. I wasn't ready to do anything nefarious yet, but I realized I needed to be alert to everything to make sure this never happened again. I also wanted to give back to people that were supporting my security testing and to raise awareness about common problems.
What is OpenWRT and OpenWRT Edge Routers? OpenWRT is a collection of firmware that runs on consumer hardware like routers that supports open source projects like Free Software and hardware like the router in this example. It started off as answer for the open source community, now it's starting to gain attention outside of the free software world as well. Why do you need an open firmware? Think about the router on your local network, it makes sure that only traffic that comes from the right IP address goes through its wireless network. That's what the gateway does too; it routes things based on IP address to prevent packets from coming from or going out of unintended locations. OpenWRT routers provide these basic functions, and that's why I chose it to learn about.
Why OpenWRT? I really didn't want to get into the weeds on why one would go with OpenWRT; there's tons of information and books out there about it. The point is, it works and it's supported by people who've gone to great lengths to help me, so it must be good right? Right? Well, I don't think so.
So if OpenWRT doesn't add anything else to a router besides routing, what makes it so special?
What port does Wingate proxy use?
I can tell if it's a client or server, but which? I found the config file but it's not there on my computer.

I also checked using cpanel and saw that the httpsslport setting is set to null (default value) - how does one set it?
It's been 2 days and I still can't get to the wingate login page to get an API key (the only option I have) so I guess my questions is can I use a different proxy at this point or should I just cancel my subscription? I use squid for all traffic except the wp-content/plugins folder, which I forward to my home server using sshfs. It's a really easy way to set up your blog at home when you're working from home, but it can also come in handy for things like proxies.

I see where you are trying to go, but that's not exactly a good solution, imo. If you have trouble logging into the admin, or even downloading it, what will that do to your plugin install? Especially if you do a lot of WP development. What proxy would you suggest to use at home? (I have used all kind of things like Tor, but I don't want anything to be blocked) I'd need a stable proxy which would be available over the web. Would you know any?
