How do I log into Google Play Games?

I don't have an account on Google Play Games because I don't have a Google ID and want to be able to access games, as described in this question.

So, what do I need to do in order to log in? I understand that Google Play Games isn't the official login for Google+ It used to be with the old Google ID system, but I can't find any information about how it works now. It's a bit different now than it used to be, so here's how to get started: Go to google.com and sign in (if you're not signed in already) Under Profile select Add a new account. Sign in with a Google ID. That should get you up and running; I've included the screen capture of the resulting login form below.

You can access your game profile from an Android device by visiting the Play Games website. Click on the "Games" tab in the top navigation. Select the Play Games app (the icon will be blue). You will be redirected to the game profile page of your Google account. In this case you can enter your username and password, you will then be able to play your game.

If you have lost your Google Play Games account or your device is lost or stolen, you can also recover your account through your phone. You can recover your account by signing into your Google Account on your phone. Tap the hamburger menu button in the top left corner of your phone screen. Then tap Settings. Select Accounts. Tap Add Account. Enter your Google Account username and password. Select the type of Google Account you want to add. Tap Next. Enter your phone number if you need to be verified. You will be redirected to Google's Verify Phone Number page. Enter the verification code shown on your phone. Select a preferred country from the list and select the preferred language. Tap Continue. If you successfully added a new account, you will see a message confirming this. If you receive an error, select Details and tap Continue. The details page will tell you what's wrong.

If you have lost your device and want to get it back, go to www.google.com/phone. Log in with your Google Account information, and then select the device you lost and follow the steps to sign in.
