How do I know if Pia VPN is working?

I have been having some issues with Pia VPN lately and I want to know if it is working, because I don't really understand what's going on when it is not working. I downloaded the VPN and installed it using 'Wireshark' from where I could watch what traffic passed through it and see what devices were connecting and what was sent through it. I've tried to figure out if I'm connecting to a VPN using a number of different applications and it always tells me that I'm not connected, which I find somewhat odd since it worked just a day ago.

The first test I did was to put my email address on the client. The reason I did this was because I remember seeing an article on Pia VPN and they recommended people use their service with it so I know for a fact that there isn't a problem with my email server. Anyways, after doing this I tried to send myself a test email through my email server to make sure it was working, but it still didn't work. Next I tried downloading a file, I found this link to be rather popular:

I downloaded it, opened the file up, pressed 'Save as', put in a name and hit 'Save'. Next I opened up the file I had saved and it told me I was not connected. When I started Wireshark I noticed that it said that there were no network connections running. At that point I knew it wasn't working because I was trying to connect through a different port on my VPN, and it didn't work for some reason. I checked the server connection status and noticed that it said my connection was connected. So, I decided to download a file using Wireshark that didn't exist on the server, which was rather popular at the time. I downloaded the file and again noticed that Wireshark stated that there were no network connections. The connection status showed me as connected though and I decided to close Wireshark and continue.

Next I tried to log in to my email server and it said that I couldn't because I wasn't connected to the internet. The connection status says that I am connected, but it shows a red warning sign to say it doesn't think I'm connected.

How do I email Private Internet Access?

We recommend you never use an email address you found on any other website. Even if it seems like your "usual" email address, don't use that one for PIA huge risk exists in trusting other people's websites to protect your email address.

To change your address for email you will need to go to your control panel (see the sidebar on the left of the screen), select "Change Email" and follow the instructions. Is it safe for me to use a web proxy that is not secure? Yes, you can use a non-secure web proxy. We recommend keeping the proxy type private (HTTP or HTTPS) and making sure the SSL version is good. You should also check the server location and IP address of the site you are connecting to.

Why can't I download apps on my phone when I'm connected to a VPN? Some mobile devices do not allow apps to connect to the internet when connected to a VPN. If you are experiencing this problem, check the connection type your VPN is using (HTTP, HTTPs, or Socks).

Do all VPN providers have to keep logs of user activity? No, most VPN providers are NOT required to keep records of what you do with their service. Some people require that a provider keep records. It's up to the provider to decide whether they log data or not.

However, if you pay for our service, we do record your activity. Can I still play online games while connected to a VPN? There are some games which are only available over the internet. These games may have a "Play over VPN" option. In some cases a website may ask your ISP to use the Internet when connected to a VPN.

What are the problems with PIA?

How many of your friends are using the PIA website? How many of your friends are looking at your information? Are you interested in people seeing your e-mail address as your name if someone sees a friend list link in an e-mail?

I've only ever seen this site being used by 2 or 3 people, and those people were pretty active participants in the community. I don't see why this needs to be hidden from the general public just because a few members think it's creepy.

The PIA people don't seem like jerks so I'm not worried about them. I'm actually more concerned with some users doing something they don't intend to, because I know some of them will get pissed when they find out what happened. I have been on this site for over two years, and I didn't know the PIA was even on there.but I can't be the only person who didn't know that.

This also makes me wonder whether or not the PIA members even consider their actions to be anything beyond being an online "group" just like most of the other online groups. That's all well and good, but how many other similar sites can you recommend to us? Is there even one site like this? What about ones that are free and/or don't seem to "care" what the rest of us think? It's one thing to be secretive if there is some law prohibiting disclosure. It's another to keep information like this from the public, period.
