How do I stop unwanted downloads on my iPhone?
With the ability to quickly share photos, it seems like people are always having a quick chat or uploading photos onto Instagram with their iPhones.
How do you guys control your unwanted downloads? I want to keep them from being shared with friends and strangers for so I have set my limit as 3 downloads within one day but this doesn't really help at all. Is there anything you can do to limit these?
If an unwanted download isn't deleted immediately via the phone settings app, it's hard to make it happen. If you delete apps from the Settings app on the phone, it only deletes the app itself, not the downloaded files that are stored locally on the phone. However, if you can delete apps from the iOS App Store, this will definitely clear them from your phone.
Also, if you have a Wi-Fi network, this will speed up the process. Wi-Fi is your best friend for dealing with unwanted downloads; but I would recommend that you use the VPN option instead of tethering because this lets you access the internet without having to worry about data usage.
When an iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, all files are stored on a remote server at the ISP's location. This means that if the Wi-Fi connection is shut off, your phone will lose access to the files. This is why it's important that you connect to a secure Wi-Fi network when downloading files to your phone.
For this question to be helpful, you must tell us the exact details about what you want to limit, how you did it, and what didn't work, which is why this question can only be awarded an expert rating. You should be able to see this information under Settings in the Phone section. Go to the general tab. Click on the network setting option.
This option allows you to change the setting for the Wi-Fi connection on your phone. Some basic settings include: How to stop unwanted downloads. 1) The first thing that we recommend is that you set your Wi-Fi networks to be hidden. Go to the Wi-Fi connection options under Settings and the General tab. You can select the hidden option from this menu. You'll no longer have to turn your Wi-Fi on or off in order to hide it from the view of others.
How do I lock certain apps on my iPhone?
How do I prevent certain apps from launching on my iPhone?
Is there a way to keep certain websites out of your iPhone web browser (so they don't open)? If I add an app to my home screen, how do I set it to hide when I launch the iPhone or to disable the "open with." menu when it is used?
Apple's own instructions on these topics are woefully inadequate for a number of reasons. It's a huge company and we tend to expect more from Apple than usual, however often they are disappointing us. This means that, even if you have a particular concern or feature in mind, Apple may not have addressed it.
But beyond that, they have little idea what you want to happen beyond the specific settings you choose to make available for configuring your iPhone. For example: how many passwords should you be required to remember? Should you always be locked out if the wrong ones are entered too many times? How often should you be reminded to enter a passcode, either through messages or by default on the lock screen? And how far do you want them to go to make sure your data is secure - should a pattern be drawn across the whole phone after a given number of wrong attempts, or should a pattern require entering a string of numbers or a short one or two word sequence or just a specific password? And for most of these things, should some sort of mechanism to reset the account if the device is lost, stolen, or cracked be available.
What happens when Apple doesn't provide a solution for such an important issue is that we're forced to find a way to work around it ourselves, which is a very dangerous situation. As long as the apps themselves have safeguards to prevent brute-force attack and similar security issues to deal with, then we're fine. If you have problems with security apps or other apps that need to store sensitive data, then it's important that you make this work properly. Most people won't care whether it's possible to access their phone if a thief breaks in.
And while I'm at it, what's up with all these "feature requests"? Does anyone actually want an "Always listen" switch on his phone?
How do I permanently block an app on my iPhone?
I want to block it for a year if possible. This is possible, but not without some technical expertise or Apple's direct assistance. Apple has the capability of blocking apps from being downloaded on your device. You can use the iOS Software Updater application to disable apps via Settings -> General -> Restrictions. That's only for devices running iOS 8 or later.
You can also use Gatekeeper or similar software and allow or deny the app. The caveat here is that it requires you to setup a passcode. That is one that you type into the device each time that it comes on, rather than relying on Touch ID. Note that this means that you can't use the phone until you add a passcode again, and it also means that all applications on your device won't be automatically approved anymore.
You will find that some things do work in spite of any of these options. For example: you still have a valid passcode, but you can install/use the offending app; you've set up App Review or have it enabled; you've turned off restrictions using the iOS Settings app; yet the app still works and the icon still appears in your Home screen. That means that there is an outside source that is allowing your iPhone to download and run an application on your device.
This situation leaves you in a bit of a pickle, because you might have your phone out where it can be accessed by someone else (especially if the other person is tech-savvy). They could log into iTunes and change what's available, download the app, and have it activate. It isn't likely that the app would be detected, but it can happen.
Therefore, you should probably just block it from being activated with the Apple restrictions you mentioned. It's the most secure option.
