CareerBuilder.com is a subsidiary of IAC, which has a long reputation with employers and potential employees when it comes to working online. The fact is that they don't care about whether you are hiring, or if you are currently seeking a job. And that's probably because they are making money at your expense. Here are 3 reasons why you should stay away from CareerBuilder:

How many of CareerBuilder's recruiters lie on their profiles? There is no such thing as a free market when it comes to hiring people. Whether you are the employer or the employee, both parties have an incentive to try to make each other pay less. And since CareerBuilder is owned by the same company that owns craigslist, they are taking advantage of this fact by sending recruiters that don't belong to them to employers without doing basic checks on their profiles.

According to a blog post on my website, CareerBuilder has a problem with misrepresenting themselves on their sites: For one specific example that we found, the CareerBuilder recruiter who was listed as offering the job wasn't in fact a careerbuilder recruiter - he appeared on our site for other employers who had a connection to his own site. That was a problem in and of itself, but there was more than just one incident. In some cases there was no evidence at all of the recruiter being a careerbuilder recruiter, and we never were able to identify a recruiting company associated with the careerbuilder recruiter.

Recruiters didn't get a chance to review the applicants: CareerBuilder has no obligation to allow an employer access to their information - that's part of what makes your personal data personal. But if the applicant did not send in a CV because of confidentiality issues, a careerbuilder recruiter is sent to fill in the gaps, and often without the employer getting any indication as to what's going on.

In one of my tests of the system, I created a profile on CareerBuilder and applied to a job using only data I'd personally supplied.
