Are emails from CareerBuilder legit?

Job seekers are being hit with spam emails from a scam looking to cash in on the good job economy.

CareerBuilder is one of the most widely used job boards on the Internet, so it's no surprise that scam emails from CareerBuilder are popping up inboxes across America. The emails, which can be easily identified by the careerbuilder web address at the beginning of the email, look like they came from the careerbuilder.com domain.

However, CareerBuilder is the parent company of several job boards including Monster.com, Indeed.com and HotJobs.com, all of which are targeted in these scam emails.

They claim that you have won a job and asks for payment via Western Union or Moneygram. You won a job at CareerBuilder. If you haven't heard already you will get an email notifying you of your win and an important message from our legal department to confirm your eligibility, the email says.

Click here to see a sample of the scam email: According to CareerBuilder, this type of scam has been around for at least the last six months, but their webmaster does not know why it's suddenly picking up steam. We're seeing hundreds of emails every day, but we have not seen any large increase in volume, said Jennifer S. White, director of corporate communications at CareerBuilder. Our job board has always had an issue with fraud, and this type of behavior has been around since the beginning.

What do you think? Is this just a new way for scammers to make money, or is this just another unfortunate consequence of a booming economy? CareerBuilder has taken steps to combat this kind of scam, including asking customers to report suspicious emails by sending the web address careerbuilder into the header of the email. They also include an email from their legal department that the emails are legitimate.

With the growing job market and the increasing competition for qualified candidates, it is important for us to make sure the email addresses we are sending emails to are authentic, said White. If we receive any customer reports on the suspect email address, we will investigate and take action as appropriate.
