In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a PPTP VPN account for connecting your computer to another network or server. PPTP is an extension of L2TP/IPsec VPN protocols. There are a number of issues in this L2TP/IPsec protocol such as performance, reliability, scalability and security. Although PPTP and L2TP are the same protocol in concept and functionality, they implement the tunneling differently. To understand this clearly, we need to look at the difference between L2TP and PPTP.

The first and the most important difference between L2TP and PPTP is that L2TP is an encapsulation technology whereas PPTP is a connection-oriented technology. In short, L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) is a Layer 2 protocol which works on Layer 2 and encapsulates data into different packets. When IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) has an encrypted tunnel between two endpoints, this IPsec tunnel is known as a secure tunnel. If the IPsec tunnel is not secure, it is known as an unsecure tunnel. The main difference between L2TP and IPsec is the fact that L2TP is unencrypted and IPsec has encryption. Another important difference is the point-to-multipoint tunneling in L2TP and multilayer tunneling in PPTP. If we take a look at Figure 1, we can see that the L2TP tunnel is just a tunnel that carries the traffic from one endpoint to the other. As we have mentioned earlier, IPsec tunnels have encryption.
