Is it worth taking selenium supplements?

Is 200 mcg of selenium too much to take daily?

Just saw this on another forum and thought it would be a good topic to start our new vitamin & mineral forum.

Is it safe to take 200mcg selenium in supplement form daily or too much? I have been taking it for about 1 month and am pretty sure that I took the appropriate dosage. My husband takes the same dosage so he is probably just as safe.

The human body will only accept up to 3,000 mg a day (or less). From eating selenium rich foods. If you get more than that from supplements or injections. There will be no toxic reaction. The liver will not process it. That's why you see these reactions.

The maximum limit for intake per day is 200 micrograms. As this has a toxicological role, you will get a warning. In case of overdosage and you are advised to not take. Any more than you have before. Usually, you stop when you notice a symptom. It seems there is a lot of mis-information on the internet. Regarding selenium supplements. Some states that 1,000 micrograms should be taken on a daily basis to get optimal benefits. Others insist that it should be taken in the range of 2,500 to 3,000. Micrograms. It seems that 200 is still considered "safe" and adequate but there is no scientific proof for this assumption. What I can report is my experience using the most potent. Form of selenium known, selenomethionine tablets. I take about 5x 200mcg daily for five months and had no negative. Symptoms whatsoever apart from occasional nausea and a bad feeling. Of sickness after taking it. This happened for about two days and could be attributed to the selenium supplementation. I started taking 200mcg of Se four months ago. When I started taking less than 200mcg daily I felt very low and tired. But taking 200mcg of Se daily seems to keep me very high. Without getting exhausted as well as energetic. In general, however, it is better to get Se from natural sources. Selenium levels depend greatly on where in the world the person lives.

Is it worth taking selenium supplements?

I've been doing some research on supplements for my dogs and have a few questions.

Is it worth it to give them selenium supplements? Since I have heard that it's good for the immune system I assume that would be a good thing for our pets. The other thing I'm concerned about is it could cause an upset stomach.

Replies to This Discussion. I'd do an internet search. The question of giving selenium to dogs has been answered here, so you should be able to find some good info.

If you've read something here about an upset stomach, please add your experience. Good points. My concern is, is it better to wait until you see something here and then make up your mind? Or maybe you feel like it's a good idea to take them right now? The one thing I'm seeing is, if I start now with a supplement, maybe I can even be proactive about getting them the right supplement and taking some probiotics at the same time. That way it gives the supplement something to work against or in other words, I won't see any signs of upset stomach.

Thanks, appreciate the advice. Good morning. I would not take a selenium supplement before you really need it. I have noticed my dog has improved his coat and sheen in the last 6 months since adding zinc to her diet.

One thing you could do is check the ingredients on a product. Some products contain zinc oxide, which is inorganic zinc. In order to get selenium you need an organic (inorganic) form of the mineral. For this reason, many companies have started making products without zinc oxide. They use organic forms of selenium, such as sodium selenite.
