Why is ExpressVPN blocking my internet?
ExpressVPN blocks my internet for no reason. I just have a normal home internet connection, no mobile or anything like that. I live in the US and I'm connected to a server in Singapore. I usually use a VPN and have done for years. But I noticed this week that I can't use the VPN and am not sure why. I'm thinking maybe they've updated something but I'm not sure what it could be. I'm trying to figure out why my internet is being blocked.
I tried looking at my IP in the network options on the browser but there's nothing about a VPN. But if I try to connect to the VPN it says "Network error: VPN connection failed."
Also, I haven't done anything to cause this problem. It just happened one day and I'm still trying to figure out what I did.
1 Answer. I can say that this is the first time I've heard of a VPN blocking your internet. Usually with a VPN, you want to connect to your VPN server and then get an IP address that is assigned to that server so that you can access the internet through that IP. The problem is that you can't connect to your VPN server and when you try to access the internet through that IP, your internet connection is being blocked.
If you look at the Network tab in the Firefox Inspector, you'll see that you are connected to a VPN server that is located in Singapore. If you look in the Network section, you'll see that the IP assigned to your computer is the IP address of the VPN server in Singapore and the connection type is "DNS-over-HTTPS" and the protocol is "TLS". This means that the connection to the internet is being done over the VPN server in Singapore, which is why your internet is being blocked. You need to figure out how to connect to your VPN server.
Also, when you try to connect to the VPN server, you get the error "Network error: VPN connection failed" and the reason for that is that your computer is trying to connect to the VPN server using the old IP address assigned to your computer.
How can I tell if ExpressVPN is working?
As with every VPN service, the first thing you need to know is whether or not the service works. ExpressVPN has a handy little page that lets you know. The page lists four major areas where you can tell if the service is working and three minor ones.
These areas include: Internet speed. Connection stability. Your location. Logging. With the exception of your location, all four of these areas are easy to check using the ExpressVPN website. The only caveat here is that your location will only show when you're connected to a server within the United States.
What is my IP address? Another convenient feature of the ExpressVPN website is a neat little widget that shows your IP address. In this screenshot, I've connected to the US and I'm showing IP address 172.254.3.100. This isn't my actual IP address (for reasons I'll explain in a moment), but it's close enough.
Why do you need an IP address? First off, I'll explain why you need an IP address. There are three major uses for an IP address.
A server needs an IP address to function. The main reason a server needs an IP address is so that it can talk to other computers on your network. A lot of servers operate on the concept that they're the only computer on your network. If they're not on your network, it's difficult to talk to them.
To make sure you don't have more than one copy of Windows installed on your computer, most anti-malware programs can't detect Windows unless it has an IP address. An IP address is also used to send you the site you're currently browsing on. Without an IP address, websites would have to send information over the internet using your ISP. This is not something most people want and it can slow down your browsing experience significantly.
What is the ExpressVPN desktop app? If you're one of those people who are familiar with downloading programs and installing them on your PC, then the ExpressVPN desktop app is the same thing. You download and install the app from the ExpressVPN website and then run it.
