How do I get VPN to work on BBC iPlayer?

I've installed VPN (using this guide on the BBC website) and configured it with our external IP address. However, I still can't watch iPlayer from outside. Shouldn't it work out of the box? What do I need to do to get it working?
I'm running a Mac with Snow Leopard and an Asus MBP with Snow Leopard. Are you using a router or a modem? How are you providing your IP address to your router? I'll explain both as they can vary in how they provide access to internet and how they should be set up. If you're using a modem, and your ISP is giving you a static IP address, then a simple port forward on your router will probably work for the UK. Your ISP may charge you more for a static IP address than the cost of a dynamic one, so if they offer one for free, take that. If you're using a router, then that has to be configured manually. If your router is provided by your ISP, they should have guides for setting it up.

You could always run wireshark or tcpdump to see what is going on, and check that your IP is actually the IP that you think it is.

Does BBC iPlayer work with NordVPN?

I have set up my NordVPN account so I can access the internet while in work (with the company using BT to provide it) and then using the VPN at home (with broadband). When I set up the VPN, everything works perfectly fine - I set it up on a Windows 10 machine at home. However, if I download programmes onto my Xbox from the BBC iPlayer website, the playback is extremely slow or even stops completely. It seems as if my home connection is interfering with the download of programmes - and this is the case regardless of which website I'm trying to download from.

I haven't tried all of the different VPNs recommended on this forum by the way, because I have some money invested in this device and I don't want to spend it until I know for sure that it'll solve my problem. Any ideas as to why this problem may occur? And if it turns out that my VPN is not playing a role, would this solution still apply? If you're not downloading the video using the public IP but the VPN IP you're downloading the video from then you've already failed with your theory of the VPN causing playback problems. From your post we see that you did get a decent service from your ISP (not just BT), as you say "everything worked". But also that the VPN makes it worse. With BT or other ISPs you don't need to use your own IP on the network of the VPN server, they'll take care of that for you. You can even use the same IP that your ISP provides as VPN server IP (or subnet in many cases).

Your connection setup could be a combination of your ISP and NordVPN IP address. You've indicated that it was working through a VPN when your troubles began and that could account for the problem. You're using a static address (10.8.50 in your case), and it sounds like your IP was added to the network of the VPN server you use. If this was the case and if your connection with the VPN server was established prior to your connection being assigned that IP by your ISP, you're now using an address that is not available on the public internet. It may be possible that any traffic going to this address is actually hitting your local router and not coming back across the VPN to a destination outside your local network, resulting in it being slowed down or completely blocked.

Which VPN can unblock BBC iPlayer?

I have a few questions.

First of all I have an Apple TV and would like to watch the BBC iPlayer using a VPN so I can unblock the iPlayer on the iDevice. I can buy a VPN service, however is there any VPN that will unblock BBC iPlayer as well?
