Apple ID is the primary Apple account in case a user wants to use iTunes, iCloud, the App Store and others.

With it, you are able to do things like buying or updating apps, accessing iCloud, and getting updates to your device.

There is also a secondary account (name: Apple Account) which is usually associated with iCloud (and others). That one is linked to Apple ID but doesn't need to have a credit card linked, just an email address and password. This account should be used only for those who are not going to get a credit card linked to their Apple ID.

How do I join a family? You can either add your family members as friends or create them as new contacts, then invite them. In that case, you would have to set up the same Apple ID you want to link with, and the same device types (eg, phone and tablet) that you want to associate with this new family. That should automatically associate the accounts and devices (unless you were already doing this).
