Why is my VPN blocking Google?

How do I unblock ExpressVPN?

I have the following problem: I am working on my project where I need to connect to a server via ExpressVPN but my company's proxy doesn't work for me. My ExpressVPN IP address and UserName is the same as my computer name, which is 'mzt'. Therefore, my VPN is blocked at my company. How can I unblock it?

I'm using ExpressVPN (and the same as mzt in this case) and I'm not experiencing any issues. For security reasons when you set up your ExpressVPN account (including the ExpressVPN client application), there will be a firewall set up on your VPN server. This means that your VPN can only be used from your VPN subnet (for example, if your ExpressVPN subnet was 192.168.0, the VPN can only be used from this subnet). If you try to access a server outside of your VPN subnet, you'll be denied access. If you want to access a server outside of your VPN subnet, it may be worth checking out VyprVPN (it appears to be more flexible than ExpressVPN). If your VyprVPN server allows remote access outside of your VPN subnet, you may have access to other devices/servers.

Note that if you get denied access to another device on the Internet (eg your company router or laptop) and you're on your VPN server, it may be due to your employer enforcing a "proxy check" (this usually happens when logging onto certain websites in Firefox etc.) In these cases, you'll need to talk to your IT department to get the proxy configuration changed.

Hope this helps.

Since the end of last year (and prior to this block in Spring), I ran into problems trying to connect to ExpressVPN via the Google Chrome web interface at . If you look at the 'Connection' dropdown menu, you'll see that most users are getting a 'connection refused' error (see below for more on this). If you attempt to connect manually (by right-clicking the green 'Connect' button at the top, then 'Connect to VPN') you might be taken directly to the ExpressVPN main page with a connection status message: At first glance, it seems like Google Chrome is having trouble connecting to ExpressVPN on the main page. In reality, the Google Chrome web interface has its own network settings, and it's these settings that are preventing ExpressVPN from working. Since I'm using a US IP address and therefore can't use a VPN that will bypass geo-blocking, I'll have to bypass Google Chrome's network settings.

Setting Google Chrome to a VPN and Connecting to ExpressVPN. You can set Google Chrome to a VPN connection from the options bar menu (see image below). It just so happens that Google created instructions for this a couple of years ago: However, this doesn't work for me. Instead I found this guide that worked for everyone else, which simply involves enabling and connecting to Google Wi-Fi.

Now that we have a VPN, let's connect to ExpressVPN as normal. Once connected, you should be able to access both your Google Chrome browser and the ExpressVPN application. You can use Chrome Extensions (ie third party tools integrated into Google Chrome) to add ExpressVPN to your browser for convenience.

Why is my VPN blocking Google?

The issue I am having is with the following: I have been using VPNs since I was a teenager and have used numerous different VPNs throughout the years. My recent issues began when I started to research how people were accessing the internet through VPNs and came across information about the "Great Firewall of China".

That led me to looking up how to get around that. What I found was that many, if not most, VPN services do not bypass the Great Firewall of China. That did not surprise me at all, because how is it possible for you to bypass the firewall if the firewall is controlling your access to the internet?

What did surprise me, and what has left me frustrated, is that I was finding lots of references to VPN services blocking Google. If your VPN service has a firewall or "gateway" they use, then you are not going to be able to use Google. I checked to see if that was the case with every VPN provider I had ever used, and it was.

So. Why do VPN services block Google? Is it a matter of some security policy? Or is there something about the way Google loads its pages that makes it a bit trickier for VPN users to access the web. I can't think of why that would be the case.

One final note: This is not an attempt to bash any particular VPN service, only to point out the very general and very real fact that if you are using a VPN, then you are probably not going to be able to access Google. The article above is intended to clear that up.

It's probably not an oversight. If you're doing something illegal, you can be arrested at any time (if you're lucky, you may get a warning first). If you're just browsing around, Google is safe. However, if you're doing something you shouldn't, Google can tell.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping a VPN, but I would also like to point out that with the number of people who are currently doing things they shouldn't be doing (porn, drugs, whatever) Google might not be the best place to be if you want to keep a low profile. I'd also like to add that, if you're going to do anything illegal, don't be too quick to use a VPN. There are plenty of free ones. Look them up online.

ExpressVPN and its affiliates may collect IP address and other technical information when you access their websites or use their mobile applications. These collected personal data will be stored and processed in the USA in the name of ExpressVPN. It is only used to improve and protect the service. However, we do not allow third-party tracking. Therefore, if you would like to prevent ExpressVPN from doing so, please refer to their privacy policy. You can also view our privacy policy here.

A free trial offer to try out the services is available. For more info on that, please see this article. Keep in mind that some services have their own rules about how long you can stay on a free trial. That may be from a few days up to a few months or even longer. Some apps come with a 14-day free trial, whereas others may need you to purchase a subscription. Make sure to read the fine print. The most popular VPN service providers these days are also the ones with the highest prices. But don't let that dissuade you; there are many cheap VPNs out there and you can find a few that are actually free to use.

If a server uses open DNS resolvers, such as those used by OpenDNS or Google Public DNS, we cannot guarantee full confidentiality, authenticity, and/or safety of your network traffic. Since these DNS services act as an intermediary between your device and the real Internet servers, it may be possible to see the websites you visit and the text of your communications. You must always connect to VPN services via trusted VPN gateways to ensure a safe, secure, and private connection to the Internet.
