Can you get free internet if you are on Medicare?

How does a senior get free internet?

I think they are talking about a program they can sign up for that you can use the computers/free wifi at any time and if you pay (either in advance or at the end) you get unlimited usage. My brother has this and I am thinking I would like it too! Do they all do this? Well, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say: "Yes, they do". Many senior centers require you to be over 55 years old to join one of the programs. That doesn't necessarily mean a senior can't use a program though.it simply means you're forced to go through the initial process which usually requires filling out a questionnaire and possibly a physical test (or perhaps a blood test to prove that you're over 55.) Many times, an online questionnaire will ask questions pertaining to your health (eg, do you have diabetes? Do you get lots of pain when sitting? Do you need a cane to walk?), and some are so-called interactive as opposed to passive. Once these answers have been gathered, a doctor may come in and conduct a physical exam with you as well. This is done just to see if you meet the health requirements which may help you qualify for the program. Finally, a representative from the service provider comes to your local Senior Center and sets up the program so you can try it out for free. A few days later, you receive your free internet access - however, they charge a modest monthly fee to keep the program running. I've never been one to join organizations or groups that expect me to give money as part of their operation. My belief is, if a service is free, there's no need to ask me to join, become a member, and/or pay to belong. However, I've seen other senior programs at the local Senior Center that charge a small monthly fee and require a certain amount of participation. If a certain number of seniors join, then the program may be able to offer discounts to those who participate. It all depends on the program and whether the center pays for the service (it probably does). There are many senior programs that don't require anything for entry - but I don't want to be affiliated with any which cost the elderly for membership. My point in all of this is that the programs that are not free may require a membership fee in order for a senior to join. Others may actually be free.

We all know that if you are unemployed you can get some discounts at McDonald's. If you have children under 6 years old, you can get free WIC, Medicaid or Childcare. However, are there other programs that you do not know about? Here are just a few programs that everyone needs to be aware of if you or someone you know is on Medicare:

Free WiFi - Many public places offer free WiFi access. Most major U.S. Cities offer public WiFi in parks, libraries, local libraries and other public buildings. This is a way to keep your social life active without shelling out your hard-earned money for an expensive cellular provider. I believe we can get free WiFi as long as we can log-on using the same browser. Many people mistakenly think the free WiFi only involves the browser.

You should be able to use your personal library card or ID at any location that offers free WiFi.e. But you may want to do a bit of research on the Internet before going to your favorite public library, restaurant or coffee shop to find out whether they offer it. My favorite place to go for free WiFi is the WalMart in our town. It has a little corner in which you can sit and type away on your laptop.

I also want to mention that if you are using Verizon for your cellular service, you can get free WiFi access with them at the McDonalds in my area. They will send you a code by mail, and you go in, give it to a counter person, make sure you keep your phone on your person, show them your receipt from Verizon, and you get your 15 minutes free. You are eligible for this even if you are not on the Medicare plan.

Free Cable TV - If you own or rent an apartment, you may get a free subscription to cable TV. This is most often the way that landlords get some added income for the year. Most often they are using their cable bills to advertise the place so prospective renters will pay attention. Most landlords want their tenant or their tenants to be happy with their choice of rent. Many people are not aware of this.

I recently heard from a reader who went to pick up an application for a house he wanted to rent. At the door was a woman who offered the application, with rent money attached, if he would take one more application that had been put off until this morning.
