Does Smart DNS work for Netflix?

A few days ago I tried to connect to Netflix.com from my desktop and laptop. It connected OK but I could not stream anything. I then tried it on my phone and it connected fine. I was able to watch movies from the app but not the web site. I then tried it on my laptop and it connected fine and I could watch movies from the web site.

I've now noticed that on my laptop, Netflix says "Smart DNS" but my DNS is not being used. Is Smart DNS the problem? Or is it something else? Can anybody explain what Smart DNS is and whether or not it is the problem? I have a friend who is in the UK and he has no problem watching Netflix on his laptop. His DNS settings are working for him, so it must be something on my end.

Re: Smart DNS. Can you try a different DNS server and see if that works for you? I believe that is the default for Netflix but I don't know if it's the problem. The original post mentioned that DNS wasn't working for him. I couldn't understand what he meant by that.

Maybe I'm confused but is this for a mobile phone or a laptop? I didn't see any DNS settings in the browser (Firefox) and I'm not sure what the DNS setting would be in the mobile app. What I want to know is what would cause Netflix to say that it's using Smart DNS but actually using your ISP's DNS. @jrvandenboom. Thanks for replying. It's a laptop. I've never used a DNS server before. I'll try a different one and see if that works.

I've been using a VPN for a few months now and I've noticed that Netflix has stopped working on my laptop. I don't know if this has something to do with it. But I have some questions about it.

Do you have to have a VPN to use Netflix? If you do have a VPN, do you have to be connected to it all the time? If you're not connected to a VPN and you're trying to watch Netflix, do you need to disconnect first before you can watch?

Has Netflix blocked Surfshark?

I just got my first Netflix account (2 months ago), and I've been having issues for the past 3 days. After about 2 hours, I received a message saying: "Your Internet connection may be experiencing issues. Please check your connection settings."

Then, when I click on "settings", I get the following message: "The Internet settings in your browser have been changed. If you continue to browse the web, Netflix will not function properly."

I found that I can view the Netflix website without any problems, but clicking on any movie or show, Netflix hangs for 3-5 seconds and then displays a blank screen. I contacted my ISP, and they were able to trace the problem to my home router. I set up my router to port forward to a certain IP address, and now my Netflix account is working fine again. I'm just wondering, does anyone know why Netflix would block an entire network?

Re: Netflix blocked Surfshark? It's possible that the blocking could have been caused by either the firewall or some other network hardware on your home network. That's exactly what I thought, but I was surprised to find out that my ISP doesn't even have a firewall. My home network consists of a Linksys wireless router and my desktop computer. The computer connects to the modem via an ethernet cable.

I have never heard of Netflix blocking anything, but if it is on their end and not your ISP's end, you should contact them and let them know. That should be all that's needed. I'm a little surprised at the fact that they would do such a thing, but it's probably a good thing that they did.

I don't think I have a firewall on my router either.
