My last post covered an issue I had experienced since installing the VPN, which was DNS issues using the OpenDNS, or Google DNS. Well, to recap, the problem was that any computer using the "automatic" option on the router to choose DNS had a strange behavior. It would often attempt to use OpenDNS. When that would fail, it would go to Google DNS and have the same result. Sometimes the router would automatically chose OpenDNS as the DNS, but never to Google DNS.

At the time, Google support stated that the issues were due to the change in IP addresses. The last IP address assigned to my ISP was 195.154.101.5, and after that IP was lost by my ISPs network. Google support said this was because of a network upgrade that they were undergoing. However, my service on the internet never went down (the VPN tunnel did not work either).

I thought this issue must have happened to some people, so I installed my latest version of the VPN and attempted to use it. However, instead of using the default DNS setting, the Router set up automatic DNS options as well. No matter what value I entered for one of the DNS providers (Google DNS or OpenDNS), the router would always revert back to my isps DNSs. Also, after trying using those two DNSs, and failing, the router reverted back to OpenDNS again!

With this version of the VPN installed, the OpenDNS settings appeared in the control panel, but it failed to properly connect to OpenDNS. The only way I could solve this problem is to select OpenDNS in the control panel, and enter the IP address. After doing that, the OpenDNS client would connect to OpenDNS for some reason and it then would route properly.

When I tried to use the OpenDNS client, I ran into an issue where the web page returned a 504 time out error. The website (like all sites) does not like to be redirected due to being behind a router. However, once the client connected, it did get to the site, and everything worked great.
