But there are some people who will try to hack them and this may lead to a vulnerability. This is why they have to be treated with caution. This will explain how they work and also how you can protect your extensions.

How do they work? Chrome extensions add scripts and HTML elements to the current webpage. In the process, they may change its functionality or they may do something with other elements of the page. For example, a chrome extension may add an element to the page which will allow a different way of opening certain pages. A browser extension may also replace the original address bar with one that displays their current status and other information. In a sense, they are much like themes but they have very powerful actions.

So, as you can imagine, they can be used by malware authors to inject their own code into your system. This may include any part of the system including the browser itself. So, you need to look for the sources that will allow you to know if the extension is malicious or not. You need to make sure that they are the legitimate ones because otherwise, you may end up installing malware onto your computer.

What to do to protect your extensions? The best thing that you can do to prevent your extensions from being modified is to disable them. That means that you will no longer be able to use them. The process to disable them is quite simple. You have to go to the developer options (chrome://extensions/), find the icon for the extension, select it, and then disable it. Then you will be able to use it again.

This method won't prevent the modification of the extension but it will prevent anyone from injecting their own code onto it. However, sometimes, you may just want to disable the extension so that you can still use it to modify the current settings of your Chrome. If that is the case, then you may need to disable the extension through an entirely different method.

That method is to remove it.

What can a Chrome extension do?
