Can I trust Mullvad?
I used to trust them, but now I don't
In September 2023, a former Mullvad staff member published a blog post in which he described how the company misused his personal data. A few months later, I found out that it was not the only time this happened, and then I started asking questions about Mullvad's business model. I had a good excuse to look into the company: they provided my internet service, and I wanted to check whether they were honest about the service they provide.
The main way that Mullvad protects its customers' data is by signing their data traffic with an encryption key. But this does not mean that all of the traffic between Mullvad's network and my device is encrypted. Mullvad has the key to decrypt their own traffic, as well as the traffic from my other devices. This is a little bit like having your own private key to decrypt a file on your own computer.
One of the biggest drawbacks of using personal data to sign traffic is that it might make you vulnerable to tracking by third parties. When someone uses a public tracking tool (such as Google Analytics) to track your activity on a web site, they can see who's visiting that site and where. This information can then be sold to companies that want to target ads at visitors based on where they live, or by age, gender or income. A simple but effective way to reduce this risk is to never use services like Google Analytics. In fact, there's an extension called Privacy Badger, which blocks services like Google Analytics and Facebook pixel.
However, even if you don't use Google Analytics, you might still be tracked by other people, as it turns out that Mullvad might be doing a lot more than just using your personal data to sign traffic. What's their business model? A good place to start when examining a company's business model is to look at what they do. Mullvad is a VPN provider, which means that they offer their customers the ability to create a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN allows users to mask their internet protocol (IP) address and encrypt their data traffic, which in turn makes them difficult to track.
