Should I have DNS on or off?

I'm trying to figure out if I need to enable DNS on my Raspberry Pi.

I'm just now setting up a home server. My goal is to be able to run my raspberry pi as a media server and host my websites. Currently it can only browse the internet via static IP. If I turn on DNS, then it will be able to resolve domain names to IP addresses. How do I know if this is needed? That depends on the OS you choose to run on the Pi.e. The Pi comes with Raspbian, which is based on Debian Linux. In Debian Linux the default method for resolving domain names is via DNS. This means that if you configure DNS to be enabled in your browser's preferences, or on your router/gateway, then it will work. To disable DNS (as you wish to do on a Pi). Sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf. You'll then need to remove the file /etc/resolvconf/resolv.d/tail sudo rm -f /etc/resolvconf/resolv.d/tail I'd be happy to confirm that if you add the following line to /etc/rc.local dns=none. I've not tried this on a Pi myself. But it will stop DNS being used as a default.

What does DNS mean in gaming?

I have been reading up on DNS, and I do not understand it.

Can someone explain it to me? I am a newbie to networking, so please excuse my ignorance.

I have an online game, which I access through a computer that has a static IP address. What this means is that I have no control over the IP address of the computer. Every time I connect to the game, the IP address of the computer changes.

How does this change affect my DNS? I know that I need to set up a DNS server so that all of the computers on my network will know how to route any requests for the game to the right computer. But my understanding is that DNS is only needed when you are using dynamic IP addresses. My computer has a static IP address. How does this affect my DNS? Does it mean that I will need to use a different DNS server for my computer than the one I use for my game? Or, does it just mean that the name of the computer doesn't change?

Does anyone know how I can get this game to know where my computer is located? I've tried several methods of setting the game's IP address, but it never shows up. I also tried the manual method of entering the IP address into the game itself, but it didn't work either.

What is the best DNS for Discord?

I've been looking around on the Internet but most people are saying go with Cloudflare DNS.

For the past few months I've been with Amazon Route53 for all my DNS settings. Is that a bad idea? The main reason I want to change is so my account can be passwordless. Is there a way to do this without switching to Cloudflare? Thanks!

I would recommend using Route 53 to handle your DNS, as you can keep your domain name with Amazon's registrar service and let AWS manage everything else. Route 53 is also free.

Using a third-party DNS provider may provide some additional value for you, but it may come at the cost of increased risk of downtime. If your server were to go down, then your DNS entries could not be resolved. A good example is if your DNS provider's datacenter is affected by a natural disaster.

There are many types of DNS failures. For example, if you have a server and/or cloud hosting provider, then they might have their own DNS servers as well. If you're getting this error from their DNS servers, then there's no way to resolve it from AWS, other than finding the correct IP addresses for their servers and contacting them directly.

Route 53 will be free, and they offer a service to monitor and automatically update your DNS records to their servers in the event of a failure.
