Why is Netflix geo-blocking?
How it's affecting your viewing habits and what you can do about it
I'm not the world's biggest Netflix fan. I watch some of their content, but I rarely have to force myself to watch something just because it's on Netflix. Sometimes, though, I'll check out something to see if I want to watch it (which is why I didn't know about the new series that's being released later this week), and sometimes I'll watch a movie just because I can. But most of the time, Netflix is pretty convenient to watch stuff from because I just add it to my queue.
While I don't think Netflix's geo-blocking (aka: restricting access to content based on location) is an issue that I really need to deal with, it is definitely an issue that people outside the US have to deal with, and it's a huge annoyance. Netflix geo-blocking allows you to view a list of available TV shows and movies anywhere in the world (or, at least, anywhere in the US), but you can only actually watch content on Netflix if you're logged into a US account. It's meant to keep content in-country and prevent people from streaming content that they haven't paid for.
Geo-blocking has always been a problem for Netflix, but it's only gotten worse since Amazon Prime launched in other countries and Netflix has had to make big changes to try to fight off the threat. The company announced plans to stop geo-blocking in the UK in March 2023, but it looks like things are still pretty convoluted.
I've been trying to figure out how Netflix geo-blocking works, how it affects my viewing habits, and how to fix it. Let's break it down.
How does Netflix geo-block? Netflix geo-blocks content based on your location. While watching shows and movies, you'll notice that Netflix lists different content based on your country. It's easiest to explain by example, so here's what you see when you're in the US:
You'll see this on almost every device you use to watch Netflix. When you're in another country, you'll see a similar thing, but with different titles and different descriptions for the same content.
This is pretty straightforward and it works like this: when you log into Netflix from a new location, you're logged into an account with a new region.
How do I bypass geo-blocking on Netflix?
By Tovya Tarnopolsky. Netflix allows you to bypass geolocation-based blocks with the following proxy configuration: Proxy=. This proxy will let you bypass geo-blockers, but can be an IP based proxy that blocks you. You can get a VPN service with a location inside your country as opposed to your ISP. I recommend using Hola for this purpose as it works on all devices without configuring anything and provides a great interface.
However, if you want a native Netflix VPN on Windows, then check out NetFlix. It is really easy to set up and has a lot of features. You can even select which movies or TV shows you want to stream to your Windows computer. It even offers Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit versions so you can download them and install them yourself in the event of any problems. The trial version is only 7 days long and requires a paid subscription afterwards for use. But the free trial is fully functional as well.
How to Download NetFlix.com on Windows NetFlix.com uses HTTP protocol and is served through their own website. As such, most anti-virus programs and firewall programs will flag NetFlix.com as malicious. If you have any of these programs installed on your computer, you'll have to remove them in order for NetFlix.com to load. I personally like Avast as it flags most things as malware rather than virus and provides me with the most up-to-date data, so I recommend Avast antivirus on Windows computers. However, as you'll see in the section below, there's an option to download NetFlix.com directly without installing Avast on your Windows computer. That's what I'm going to walk you through in this guide.
This tutorial will work on Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Download NetFlix.com for Windows First thing you'll want to do is navigate to your web browser of choice.
