How to unblock any websites at school without VPN?

My school is in China.

They have an internet filter. I try to unblock VPN sites, but this can only be done with a vpn. However, many people at my school know how to use a vpn. Can they not also unblock websites with a regular proxy?

I'm going to school and will be using their Wi-Fi.e. The problem is that there is an in house VPN that runs on the school network. How do I get around it? I'm running a personal VPN on my phone, but I'm worried that if I do the same for the school network, it may not work because the school network is locked down. Can I bypass a VPN on school Wi-Fi?

I'm currently using a free VPN service called Hotspot Shield. Is there any way to get around this? I've tried using a proxy, but that didn't work. It's a shame because this is a great service, but I can't get past the fact that I can't use it.
