Why is iOS 18 beta not showing?
Apple's iOS 18 beta is a bit annoying.
It seems that on the night before each new beta, there's an overzealous Apple employee who gets into my home, disables my laptop's WiFi adapter, then runs off with all my files. It's a real pain, and I haven't been able to figure out why it happens every time.
If you read this on Apple's own support pages, then you know that the workaround is just to hold down the Shift key while starting up the computer. That works at least 99% of the time for me. But only 99%. And even if you've got "shift" working, iOS 18 still doesn't install on my laptop.
As an alternative, then, I've written this script that does all the "shift" stuff for me automatically. If you open up your Terminal and type in this line of code, then hold down the Shift key while the computer is starting up: sudo /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.InstallAssistant.plist ChangeFile: a -p -c .installsshiftshift-on-boot.plist, change file name in script, then edit file and uncomment out the "shift" section.
Why do you think that's happening? How do I fix it? Update 4:29 PM. In light of what I posted above, it's probably worth mentioning that you can check if any apps try to access or control your WiFi adapter when your computer starts up. Try launching the App Store or Safari and see what happens. If nothing happens, the problem is most likely caused by iOS 18. If you see any apps trying to access your WiFi adapter, then it's most likely not caused by the script above.
The script above takes a shot in the dark and just changes the plist file. It's possible that your issue is fixed if you've got some other app that's causing your problems, rather than iOS. You should find out what's going on though.
Update 2:56 PM. I'm sure you have a lot of things running when your computer starts up. Maybe it's one of those silly apps that doesn't close properly. Check your Activity Monitor.
Update 2:46 PM.
When can I download iOS 18?
The release date has been promised many times already, but there's still no official confirmation.
We hope it won't be too long.
There is a new version of iOS out now. You can find it at the Apple website, and it can be downloaded from the iTunes Store. We've had to reinstall a couple of devices after updating, because the process has been slightly more complicated than before. The usual method is to plug in your iPhone or iPad to your computer with a USB cable and click "Trust" to update. Some of the older iPhones do not trust the new iPhone. They won't update and tell you that you need to turn off and on your iPhone and then connect the device to your computer. You have to take a few steps to download and reinstall iOS. Here's what you need to do to get the new iOS on your iPhone and iPad.
The new version comes out around every year, so I guess it's not a big surprise that there is a new version of iOS available. The new version of iOS comes with a new set of emoji, including some that replace certain animals in the previous version of the operating system. Apple calls them Animal Emoji, and while they aren't perfect replacements, they are fun to use in text messages. I will give an example of how it works in an upcoming story. They're called Animal Emoji, but it is actually the Unicode standard that is used, since there were a lot of different sets of characters out there. A lot of emojis have replaced the classic "beak and claw" style of symbols.
If you own an iPhone 6, the release of iOS 11 has made it possible to run on a 32 GB iPhone 6. The latest version of iOS 11 supports the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus to run on a 32 GB space. Apple has added a feature called 64-bit support, which means that this update makes it possible to run iOS on a bigger storage space. It is the only way for a new iPhone to get the 64-bit version of iOS. You'll also have the option of installing iTunes, iCloud, and iMessages to free space on your phone.
There has always been a concern regarding iOS updates. When they roll out, there are problems that plague iPhones and iPads with a little bit of extra software. This version of iOS contains over 100 bug fixes and an additional 300 security fixes.
