There are two reasons it isn't possible to join a random realm at the moment. 1) The patch is out for 3.3 and 3.5 but not yet live, so people have to log out of their current server to login to a new one, where they can now play on a random server.

2) The game doesn't recognise realms on different realms because of what Blizzard call 'dynamic cross realm' systems. This means if there is another realm on another server on another faction it will not allow you to join them because of what it calls a 'cross realm issue'. This happens to people on different servers on the same realm or people in the same realm but on different servers.
