Who was James T. Kirk's son?
I didn't know until this afternoon, but I'm going to tell you: My God, it's a great story!
I've spent today looking through my old issues of Star Trek magazine. It's kind of sad that, as much as we loved Star Trek, the magazine isn't really about the show anymore. It's filled with all sorts of weirdness. Here's how Kirk and Spock were related, straight from the page of the August 1991 issue of Star Trek Monthly.
Kirk's son is named Jonathan. As I read the article I found myself wondering if the baby name Jonathon would have been much more suitable for the boy who was to take on the world's most important mission. On November 1st 1984, Jonathan appeared on the screen. The son of Captain James T. Kirk, he was now the first to bear the name.
The article goes on to explain some more details about his birth, and the circumstances surrounding it. As it turns out, we learn that Spock and Chekov were present at the birth of their first child. "At that time," the magazine explains, "he and his father were the two biggest names in the galaxy."
What? That seems unlikely. Why wouldn't Chekov be more famous? Well, I don't think it's right to give the impression that we think Chekov was ever more popular than Spock. He never took over as captain, for example. But when it comes to Spock versus Kirk, Chekov has had a lot more exposure. This is not a fair comparison, but that's how it seems to have been constructed. The first mention of Spock and Kirk being equally famous seems to be right after Spock was made captain.
So maybe Chekov was more famous? Let's say that we're supposed to think of both Spocks as the famous captains of the Enterprise, when in fact Kirk got a lot more exposure as a captain. Perhaps Kirk's popularity had grown even since the original show began. In any case, there was no "son of James T. Kirk" before 1984, so no one in the magazine knows anything about Jonathon's life before that date. When Jonathon arrives, we learn that he's Kirk's son and will follow in his father's footsteps.
What's funny about all of this is that we never thought Kirk was going to father another kid until Spock's kid arrived.
What happened to Kirk's brother Sam?
I asked myself.
Did he turn on Kirk, too?
"It's not a secret," Mina answered. "They were killed when they were little. Kirk grew up in the care of the Bureau. He's always been very secretive about his family."
"What do you mean?". "He refused to talk about it with me until I married him. But he used to tell me everything when he was a teenager. He loved talking about his family, even though they weren't alive anymore."
"Why didn't he tell me?" I asked. "You would have told him how much we loved each other. Then you would have told him how much you missed your family."
"But". "You don't have any brothers or sisters. I didn't want to risk telling you about them until I knew you could keep a secret. Besides, Kirk and I have so much in common. I'm sure you know that, since you came here."
I had no idea what she meant. And she couldn't have been serious about my missing family. So many things about Mina were false. She must have known I didn't want her to think that about my past. I had to trust her.
"I want to ask you something, Mina," I said. "Why do you like me?" She hesitated. "I've been trying to work that out for myself. Maybe because I've been in love with someone who doesn't exist."
"I'm sorry," I said. "I didn't mean to" She shook her head. "I know you didn't. But it's all right. I'm not upset. I know you're real. I feel close to you. That's what counts."
"I wish we could be together," I said. "No one has ever loved me as much as you do."
"Is that all it is?" She laughed. "I've heard that from every girl I've ever dated."
"Do you like me for what I am? "Or do you want me for some kind of secret project?". "It's a mixture of both," she said. "I'll tell you the truth, if you really want to know. I've been attracted to you since the first day we met.
Did James T. Kirk have children?
Star Trek creator says he did
In her 2026 book 'Star Trek - The Birth of Star Trek' (Pocket Books) author Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens revealed that Captain Kirk had a child. But the couple, who were together from 1977 to 1989, could never confirm whether Kirk actually fathered a child with Majel Barrett. Barrett, who starred as Dr Carol Marcus in The Original Series, died in 2026 after a battle with cancer. Kirk's son has always been a mystery - his existence or non-existence has been the subject of many fan theories. Now one writer says the truth has finally been revealed by the actor. William Shatner was recently interviewed by the National Public Radio show WaitDon't Tell Me! He was asked about his experiences with Barrett, and he confirmed her pregnancy. "She was pregnant," Shatner said. "We went through three different scripts, because there are things you want to talk about when you're going to be a father. And she was pregnant with our first child."
Shatner, who played Kirk opposite Barrett in The Original Series, went on to say that when they got together she was a little pregnant. The actor also recalled seeing news stories of her passing, telling the show host he was glad to see that her illness was coming to an end. While the new revelations don't really answer the question of whether Kirk had children, it gives hope to those who have been trying to find out the truth about the character for years. Barrett's daughter from a previous marriage, Tricia Leigh Fisher, is featured in the book. In his memoirs, Kirk reveals that he had a miscarriage and that this led him to decide not to become a father. It is thought that The Original Series actress Majel Barrett suffered a miscarriage during her time on the show. She passed away in 2026 at the age of 53.
The Birth of Star Trek: How The Original Series Changed The World, by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, is published by St Martin's Press in hardback and ebook formats The Kirk/Barrett relationship never really happened for me. There's no proof that Kirk and Barrett ever even knew each other.
Is Sam Kirk James Kirk's father?
A lot of people have had this question, and I have too.
I don't think he is, and if it's not Kirk's father, why does everyone believe that? The story behind "The Parent Trap" was actually a little more complicated than you might imagine. And yes, the main point was that they were married and divorced.
I think it would be safe to say that Kirk is not Kirk's biological father. But it was implied that Kirk's father had died.
And let's face it, what with Kirk and Spock being brothers, it's pretty likely that they would be related at least by genetics. The original Kirk was married in the 1800's, so that makes it possible that Kirk could be Kirk's biological father.
What are your thoughts on the story that Kirk is the son of a woman Kirk married in the 1800's? Or do you think that story was made up to explain the connection between Kirk and Spock? I've seen different places that suggest it. But honestly I'm not sure where it's come from. It could be a simple misunderstanding.
As I said, I can't recall anyone else talking about this. And I really can't remember exactly where I read it. But that was the story that was given in the book.
