What happened to Captain Kirk?
"?
" is a two-part episode of the American science fiction television series Star Trek. The two parts were originally broadcast on NBC January 29 and 30, 1968.
The episode concerns the apparent death of Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise and his subsequent revival by alien doctors. The episode was written by Ronald D. Moore and directed by Marc Daniels.
Despite being a part of the original broadcast of the series, "What happened to Captain Kirk?" was not one of the original syndicated Star Trek shows that ran from 1966 to 1969, nor was it one of the three original Star Trek television shows that ran from 1966 to 1969. Plot. Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise is brought back to life by an alien race called the Tellarites who wish to preserve the memory of Kirk's life as a cultural symbol. They create a machine capable of duplicating Kirk's brain patterns and have Kirk, now a hologram, live aboard the Enterprise. They also duplicate the bodies of the Enterprise's crew members, including the crew of the first Enterprise, but have Kirk and the original crew members die again. Kirk has a chance to tell his story.
Part 1. The Enterprise is in the vicinity of Tellar, a planet rich in valuable minerals, when Captain Spock suddenly dies during an away mission. Captain Kirk, the navigator Mr. Sulu and the helmsman Chekov take his place. Kirk has Spock's body transported aboard, while the Enterprise continues its journey. Kirk is shown his deceased wife, back at the start of their relationship. They are shown together at the Academy as well as in the first picture taken of them by astronaut John Glenn. Kirk visits his aged parents on Earth, who are dismayed when Kirk leaves without saying goodbye. He then departs the ship for a mission to explore some nearby planets.
While travelling near a large nebula, the Enterprise encounters a small craft piloted by Kirk. He is the last of his crew, and Kirk is shocked to find that he has lost his memory of his time on the Enterprise, as well as the Enterprise's mission. He remembers that he once had a wife named Carol Marcus and a child named Jim Kirk, Jr., and also remembers seeing a picture of John Glenn, who will later become the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth.
Does Kirk ever become an admiral?
Or is he promoted to vice-admiral during this film?
According to the Star Trek: Discovery season 2 novel "The Bells of St. John", Kirk becomes a full Admiral when he makes an important speech in front of the Fleet. It's the scene after the discovery of the USS Gabriel, that Kirk discovers there are three planets with two suns in the same system and are also home to life. The Federation wants to go there and find out what happened and how they came about.
The admiral was a thin, graying man with a bald head, and his eyes. glittered with energy and determination. "How much time does Starfleet have before the Klingons find them?" he. demanded. "They won't find us for another thirty hours," replied Kirk. "No one has ever gotten within twenty thousand kilometers of a planet. with two suns before. They'll never find us."
The admiral glared at Kirk. "I'm going to be in command of the mission." Kirk shook his head. "I would feel better if you didn't."
"That's my decision." "Maybe, but you'll have to make it to Admiral Uhura." The admiral snarled. "Don't make me repeat myself!" "I'm sorry, sir. I didn't mean to imply" "You did." The admiral glared at him some more. "Admiral Kirk, are you finished with your remarks?". "Sir, I'm finished," said Kirk, and the admiral turned back to his. staff. So there's no real need to call him Admiral Kirk while he is on the Enterprise. In fact he is called "Vice-Admiral Kirk". It's only a title, it doesn't give any extra rank. And also, it seems he becomes Admiral later on in the novel.
