The most secure answer to your question is to put one of your servers into full blown failover mode - auto reconnect to it (if needed) - and to monitor it for connectivity - which can be achieved by a combination of monitoring tools - ntop and tcpdump - or even snoop as detailed here: As long as you are happy with the results, no need to have any automatic reconnection, nor for client software to try to run on a downed server. We need to have the client system always up and always looking at the servers. This has been accomplished one of the systems already. When the server goes down, it will check to see if the client is still available. Then if it is down, it will check to see if there is a second server. If there is a second server, it will load the files from it and then continue on. Once the second server becomes available, it will continue on. It is not necessary for the client to check every time the server is up or down. I am just trying to find out if there is a better way to do this. The only other way I know to do this is to reboot the client.

There are two options you can use to automate what you're asking for, either have android always on VPN without even knowing it (I'll show you later how), or by using a VPN app to do exactly what you asked for. (the downside is that you don't have the ability to disconnect unless you know the VPN is still active).

I personally use PPTPvpn as my favorite VPN app (it's free and works well) and its feature is called Keep-Alive. When I connect to my VPN it will automatically attempt to reconnect if there is a connection drop at anytime of which I choose when I originally connected. Once connected I can disable the keep-alive from the app's settings under VPN settings and manually turn it back on when required. The app also allows for manual connections and disconnections of the VPN from my phone or tablet whenever I decide.
