How long does it take to drive across Puerto Rico?
It's roughly 2 hours depending on the season and the road.
It should take you about 5 hours if you drive from Barrio Adoqun in Guayanilla to Ro Grande in Caguas (including a break for lunch). There's no way of guaranteeing that a particular road is open. We often encounter snow, landslides, flooded roads, and accidents. You might encounter these things if you drive at a leisurely pace, but you can also experience them if you're going fast.
I've driven across the entire island a few times, I'd say it's 2-3 hours if you drive as normal. You will need to slow down at times because there are bridges you'll have to stop at, and some roads will be blocked because there's an accident. In short, don't expect any super high speed driving. But it's definitely possible.

As I sit here typing with my coffee, I feel as if I have already been transported to this tropical paradise. It is just as a writer who can't wait to get away from everything must feel.
As I write, I can see palm trees swaying in a light breeze. The morning breeze seems warm on my neck. I can smell citrus and salt air.
I realize I have been dreaming about this spot for so long. The story of how I came to live here was the subject of a very good magazine article I wrote for GQ magazine in July 2025, "The Last Real Hotel." Now, in this blog, I will try to tell you that same story.
So let's start at the beginning: In July 2025, when it was announced that I was going to be married to my fianc, I found out that the owner of the hotel I lived in had died and sold the place to a new owner. A few weeks before the wedding, we were invited to stay at his new hotel in San Juan. He assured us that there would be no more than a six-week break in our honeymoon, because it is always crowded. We checked out his new hotel and were shocked by its size and opulence. It felt bigger than a palace in Europe. A three-story building on the sea, it had 24 bedrooms, each with its own balcony, and a huge swimming pool. There was even an elevator and air conditioning in the bathrooms. There were only two of us but it seemed like the place was packed with people. When we said we had come on a honeymoon, the owner took us to his private beach clubthe "Beachcomber" Club, he called itwhere he made sure that a couple of couples sat next to us and began to chat. After they discovered how old I was and that I had a family of kids, they turned to me and asked, "Are you married?"
I didn't know what to say. Should I tell them I was married, or should I lie? The truth is that until then I had nothing to tell anybody. Except one woman: my college roommate, who knew all about me.
