How do I add a VPN to my school laptop?
I just have bought a new School laptop (a MacBook) and want to add a VPN to it as the connection my school has blocks some of the sites I used to visit (mainly for academic purposes). I understand how to open up the firewall in ubuntu but just unsure as to how to add the VPN.
(As you can tell from my school email address I have no idea how to connect a school uni VPN). The simplest way is usually to install OpenVPN on the system that connects to the internet (your work laptop or whatever). You then need to configure your schools servers (the vpn server from school) so that they point to your systems OpenVPN instance, making sure you use a suitable IP address for that instance to be able to route traffic.
How you do this is probably the same as any other linux network configuration, but here are a few tips: If the DNS servers at school all point to Google, point those DNS servers at the Google records you want (this is assuming you want to use the default VPN client). Make sure you setup a local routing table that routes to your work's IPV4/IPV6 interfaces. Configure the DHCP lease at school so you always have an interface defined for when you are off campus. Make sure OpenVPN uses the tun device on the vpn server if your work laptop does not have a tun device built in. I've done this by adding eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces on the vpn server (I did not reboot) and adding a route to make sure OpenVPN creates its own tun device.
Install an application like uTorrent or rTorrent so you can download a torrent via your vpn service. Torrents will have the correct interface IP and so should work.
If you feel comfortable configuring OpenVPN at your school (as they must do so they can give you internet access), your school staff will probably be able to help you set this up.
