What DNS should I use with ExpressVPN?
DNS is the standard protocol that web browsers use to resolve the domain name of websites, including for their top level domains (eg .com or .org). A DNS service provider is usually used to host all of these names and ensure they point to a correct IP address.
With ExpressVPN, you have two options for DNS: ExpressVPN's own DNS service (ExpressVPN.co) or OpenDNS. You can also directly access OpenDNS servers on a public IP address, bypassing ExpressVPN altogether.
With ExpressVPN, all your traffic is routed through its secure VPN servers so it's important to choose a DNS service provider that won't have any connection to your ExpressVPN traffic. This could be a major security risk if you use an unprotected OpenDNS server.
What is the ExpressVPN DNS setting? When you sign up for ExpressVPN, you're given the option of setting a specific DNS server address that ExpressVPN will route your DNS queries to. You can change this setting from the ExpressVPN app itself, under Options > General Settings > DNS: This feature is limited to the iOS app and we recommend using OpenDNS for DNS instead. If you prefer the Android app, you can choose OpenDNS there too.
How to setup ExpressVPN with OpenDNS. You can access your OpenDNS servers directly by connecting your VPN to an external public IP address. This means you can bypass ExpressVPN completely and only connect your VPN to OpenDNS to protect your connection.
If you do this, it's important that you use an encrypted connection. For most people, this will be via a VPN with Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS), such as ExpressVPN.
Connect to a OpenDNS server at with your VPN and visit one of its DNS services (in this example, dns.opendns.com)
You can now open any website on the internet in its full glory. To change the DNS setting, use the ExpressVPN app to change the DNS settings in the Settings tab: In the Settings tab of the ExpressVPN app, click Options and then General Settings. Click on the DNS settings option.
How to set up media streamer ExpressVPN?
Introduction.
If you've always wanted to try digital media streaming with a VPN service, but were put off by the long list of features and configuration options that come with some VPN apps, ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN providers for that reason. For free trial users, the ExpressVPN service has an ad-supported no logging policy for those who want to give VPN services a chance, without losing access to their data. ExpressVPN also bundles its own VPN clients across multiple platforms for those who haven't yet found the one app that fits your preferred usage pattern the best. With the media streams feature baked into this package, ExpressVPN gives you many options for browsing the internet privately, from desktop, tablet and mobile. Here's how to get started.
Getting started with ExpressVPN. While VPN services are notoriously difficult to install, especially if you're switching from a competing provider like ExpressVPN is often harder than most. Once you have a working client in place, you can take this guide for a free user in two separate sections; installing the MediaStream software on PC and Mac, and connecting your VPN through the Netflix app. Finally, an ExpressVPN subscription also unlocks premium tools like DNS Leak Protection and Double VPN, which we'll talk about more later. It's not perfect, and lacks some of the customization benefits of other VPNs (we'll discuss some of these in our final review), but its ease of use and wide support for protocols and locations make it one of our favorite free VPNs.
