As we all know, Gmail provides us with IMAP and POP accounts. When we setup a Gmail account, we choose our POP/IMAP server as shown below. We can also choose to use personal IMAP. Should I enable IMAP in Gmail?

I have a Gmail account which is used for several purposes, it is also linked to my company domain (I use a private address), there are 3 email addresses in this account and I only want to keep one of them, but I would like to be able to receive notifications of new emails. The idea is that each new email will go to one of the other 2 email accounts.

So should I enable IMAP to be able to access my email? Will that affect my security? Will I be able to access it from outside my network? Are there any downsides? Is it worth enabling? I found that after I had enabled IMAP on my gmail account, it could be quite slow to access it. I'd recommend not changing anything if you don't need to. If you want to try it out, then wait until you have some email, and just send yourself an email. If it connects, then change it back. You can always disable it later if you don't like it.

I think gmail is a bit faster in regards to accessing the inbox from outside your own network than any other program. I had the same concerns as you, but now with this being said it won't hurt to enable imap, its probably going to be the best option you have.

I've just read the documentation on gmail regarding its IMAP services, and it says that you will not be able to access your messages via IMAP from a non-Gmail email address. I understand the security reason behind it, but it would be quite convenient to be able to do so, and for some of my client applications it's vital.

It's more about what you want to do with it -- If you want your personal email to be accessed from outside your network, then it's pretty much mandatory to enable IMAP.
