Is Plex media legal?

I've gotten some emails and PMs that make me think about it.

It's not as obvious as YouTube videos, but then that's a legal issue in its own right.

Most of this question is answered in the Plex FAQ - Plex Media Server is not legal if you're distributing or making copies of protected content. In these cases, Plex is in the gray area - although we are actively developing to make our products even more legal.

Here's the real question I'd like to answer: Does it work without the client? When I use Plex or Emby I don't have the client - I play all media on my Android phone. I do not stream - just play media locally.

First, the short answer: yes it works. You can install Plex Media Server on almost any computer; and as long as you can connect to the server with your TV-tuner (Satellite receivers / HD-Cards are a little trickier) - and you have a HDMI cable, you can get rid of the 'TV' option.

In my mind it just makes sense. I want to be connected, not watching TV. Sure the user interface is TV - but so what. No more, just less.

Why not stream? The same reason most don't have a DVR yet. It's messy, complex, expensive and confusing and, until recently, hard to find software. And the software that does work for you tends to eat up a lot of power, especially with 4k streams. You can put up 4 times as much media content into a server, and save yourself the hassle and the power consumption. With cloud-services, you can access all the local media you own with one click, not to mention access from anywhere you've got wifi.

We've built a product that lets you just stream - no client. That's true whether you're using AirPlay, DLNA or Plex. You connect, press play - you're done. That's Plex.

Let's talk about Plex. Plex has been an active participant in the battle between internet censorship, file sharing and piracy.

Is Plex HTPC free?

I just received Plex media server version 3.

5.6.25 from Plex Inc. For my HTPC. However, they say it's only free for 5 hours, and then I will have to purchase the full version. Is this right? I don't want to waste 5 hours of my time.
