Is my Netgear router too old?

My Internet connection is terrible.

I have tried it in my parents' house to use the same modem and router as mine but when I go into the router's configuration and open up the port forwarding settings, it asks me if I want to open port 9987 or the other 3 ones for my netgear router. It seems my netgear router is too old to let me do this. I have a wireless network card inside my pc. Do you think it could be the problem? I'm just trying to make this work because my Internet sucks without the router. Would this be the problem? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer! When you say "too old", do you mean that it doesn't support certain features? What features do you need for using the port forwarding feature? How are you connecting to your Netgear router? (What kind of cables/modem?) Does anyone else have trouble with it, or only your home's router? If so, how is yours set up? How is your internet? Are you able to surf the web? If so, what pages give you problems? The internet is working on my side, it's just weird that my parents get a connection and I don't, even though their ISP's router is newer than mine and it works fine. They can download like 20 gb of data in 2 weeks without breaking a sweat whereas I can't download more than 100kb and then it takes minutes before it will start working again. They were able to solve my problem by making me sign into their account and then turn on my modem, that worked perfectly for me and I was able to sign in and everything was fine. I've never had a question before on this forum but. ? All of these things seem to have happened all at once, at least to me. My internet has been acting strange the past couple weeks, and my parents' computer gets an ipv4 address from their router(I know we're behind a dsl modem) and we can't even connect to that. The next day their computer starts refusing to connect and I can't connect either, even though I'm on the same modem and my parents can connect just fine.

Long answer - Yes, you can setup your router without using the router app. It is not required.

Routers use the same protocol and communication as your phone, computer, and other devices. If your device has a default gateway (router), it can directly communicate to the router using that.

Some routers, like the Asus routers, require the application to complete the set up process. Other routers will work fine without it.

Why is my Netgear router not connecting to the internet?

I have two Netgear WNDR4500 wireless routers running WAN2 and WAN1 (and all their ports are blocked in every possible way for good measure). Both have a 10Mbit/sec (ethernet) connection.

Today I noticed they no longer see each other, they cannot even ping each other from either device (but when WAN1 is offline then WAN2 can see it). When we try pinging WAN1 from WAN2 then WAN2 also gets the ping requests but says "destination unreachable."
When we try connecting to the router console and doing a scan, we see that both routers are still showing the same addresses on their status lights. We were able to successfully connect just a few hours ago, so it's not like the router itself has shut off or lost the connection or anything. I've tried rebooting both routers multiple times with the same result. They were working before, just fine yesterday, then this morning we got nothing, and there was no error message during this issue.

Any idea why this happened? Is there some sort of update that I missed? Or something else? They both have the same SSID that we assigned them, and I've used the same passwords (we've had one long, and one short password for over a year). I should note that a) both devices will pick up local networks fine (I'm not trying to connect to them at the moment) and b) the network I've created in my test computer works fine when it accesses WAN1 and WAN2.
