What are the five types of joystick?
In a computer, a joystick is an input device designed to help a computer user direct a cursor or a weapon through analog representation of what the real-world joystick feels like when you move it. The first (and simplest) kind is the "joystick cord" that looks like a cord that extends from the computer to the actual joystick. It is usually either a cord that you twist with your fingers or a cord that connects to a control stick, which is much longer and typically made of hard plastic.
The second kind is an adapter that adds to your computer case or other enclosure (like a desk or other equipment) so that you can plug a joystick cord into the existing USB ports. Next is the "rotary" style joystick. They look like a mouse ball, and some (but not all) can be spun. Many PC games and media players have a built-in rotary joystick for moving around windows or menu items.
Then are "multi-axis" joysticks (these feel the same as a mouse but are physically different). There's also a small remote control version of these.
The last type is a "gamepad", which might look more familiar to some as it plugs in to a video game console, but it is a standalone controller used with non-game software. These don't really have to be wired to a computer; they use wireless technology.

But it can get trickier as these types of controls are shared by multiple games on the. Machine. In these cases the control has to have an identifier for each different game.
Joystick is not a standard term so in this case one could either: a) Have the different joystick identifiers be used on different game titles or: b) One joystick be shared across multiple titles (as long as it is unique for all titles). There is no correct answer, it depends on the purpose of the controller. Which buttons can I map which actions in MAME? What if I want a different set of actions from the main game? This will depend on the software for this controller. You should check out the documentation for the actual controller in question. But I do have some information that might help.
These two controllers have what we call a 'button mapper', the top part lets you choose. Which side you want your buttons and the bottom part lets you choose what function they perform. The mapper here would work best if the functions you want to select were in sequential order. Because I can't really think of many situations where a second set of button function on an. It might surprise you to find that there are still many games using a traditional game pad, or joystick; in fact, I would be shocked if any non-game genre had an official title where joystick is in the name, like most shooters. And with recent trends in mobile game development towards touch screens and on-screen d-pads, it has been impossible to ignore that there are some great and highly functional controllers currently being sold that are still not a relic of the past. There are two types of games that use a joystick today: 1) old school games designed in the 1970's or before, and 2) indie games/freeware for smartphones. Let's review a couple of very different examples of these two genres.
The Old School Video Game: Nintendo DS. This is a classic example of what we're talking about here, a gamepad from Nintendo. While both the original DS and DS Lite were technically a bit dated (by modern standards, and in its price point), it's no surprise that Nintendo decided to include both analog sticks on the 3DS and their more comfortable d-pad. It's safe to say that there aren't a whole lot of titles that are on the DS or DS Lites catalog for a game other than Tetris and Mario Kart. Still though, the Nintendo DS is a fantastic device if you are a collector of old school video games because it will easily allow you to play the most authentic feel of these classic games with all the modern conveniences you've come to expect in a high quality device, which includes HDMI output, battery power, and an SD card slot. If you can swing it for the low price, pick it up if you haven't played with it in awhile.
