Why is VPN split tunneling bad?
?9. Is it that much of a problem? Or is there a reason for this? Answer. This is the most common complaint I hear about split tunneling and it's one of the main reasons why I don't like it. The short answer is that VPN split tunneling has been a feature in most VPN clients for years, but has never really been good enough for me to use it consistently. The longer answer is that split tunneling creates additional issues and I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the time split tunneling is used in a way that's not ideal. I've been using VPN split tunneling for years and I've always used it the wrong way. Here are some of the problems with split tunneling: Noisy. Slow. Lack of transparency. Inability to set up a static IP address. Inability to be used as a SOCKS proxy. Security and privacy concerns. Lack of control over ports. Lack of support for IPv6. Lack of ability to port forward through VPN. Lack of options for NAT-PMP. And many more. I've written extensively about why I don't like split tunneling. I can't count the number of times I've had someone ask me about why I don't like split tunneling and then they say so you must have good reasons for not liking it. I've given you a list of problems and I'm sure that you can think of others. If you're wondering why I don't like split tunneling, then I hope that this article will help you understand my position better. Most VPN clients support split tunneling but I just don't use them.
Does Surfshark change IP every 5 minutes?
or I really have to change my DNS in order for it to work?
No. Your DNS settings (which in turn affects the DNS resolution) are responsible only forwarding DNS queries to the right name servers, it doesn't affect any queries of other domain's names.
With that said, I'm not sure what DNS you're using, so this is what I'll do. Please note that I'm assuming here you mean "surfshark.de" as your example in your question.
Open your router's IP settings. For example with 192.168.1 and "gateway" being 192.1
Enter "DNS". Enter "172.6".
Hit "Apply". (Replace "172.6" with whatever servers you choose, "8.8" is a common choice.)
Turn your wifi modem back on.
