Why is Google blocking access to an app?

Google's recent attempts to force developers into a new subscription scheme has resulted in widespread controversy, both in terms of apps being blocked and developers feeling that they have been pushed around by Google.

I was reading through some of the articles written about the story so far and it occurs to me that there is a lot of misinformation out there. I've never heard of anyone being forced into a new subscription scheme (unless they are forced to have a subscription scheme at all). Furthermore, I haven't heard anyone saying that developers were pushed around by Google, I've heard complaints about the inconvenience, and the fact that Google didn't go far enough to stop this.

So for those people who aren't confused by the latest google news, I will try to summarize the situation. Google is attempting to push the subscription model. Not only are they trying to stop people from using apps without a subscription, they are attempting to create a new and innovative (to them) subscription model that allows apps to be monetized. They even made changes to Admob in an attempt to help Google Play developers make more money. In doing so they had to make these changes across all of their products and I believe the changes have resulted in numerous app stores being blocked or requiring a subscription.

Some users found out about this via notifications in their Google Play app which led to many users complaining about the lack of notification system for app store changes, while others were unable to find out until they went to check why their Play apps weren't working. Many developers were unaware of this change, and the majority still don't appear to be aware of it. Most have either been using the service for years or have a small app with not a lot of usage, therefore not seeing much benefit from the subscriptions.

Developers feel pushed around and as a result of being threatened with loss of access to the Play market, they are complaining. So while it's completely unfair that companies like Google get to force this change and developers have lost their access to their own developer accounts, that doesn't mean that it was Google's fault. Google's response. We've seen responses from a number of high profile developers stating that they are willing to pay for the extra services offered through a subscription rather than being forced to continue relying on the ads business model.

How do you fix this app is blocked by Google?

I have an older app on Android.

I'm trying to upload it to Google Play, but Google is blocking it for being too old (it was originally posted in 2023 and there is an update in 2016). How do you fix this? The app is currently on sale for 99 cents and has been for a few days now. Is this something the app developer can do or do they need to contact Google Play to get it unlocked?

You need to submit the app for review again. You are going to need to submit the same binary and add a new version number to reflect that it was submitted recently.

What apps have permission to my Google Account?

I created a new Google Account yesterday.

The account is connected to my Android phone (Android 9) and my Gmail account. As I'm logged in to my phone and using it's web browser, I'm logged into my Google Account as well.

Today I read an article on Android Central about a bug, which can be found by some apps using the "Access Account Data" permission. It turns out that one of the apps (com.gmalware.apk) actually does this. I was surprised because I haven't installed any such app. However, the permission has to be granted by the user.

I assume the app only has permission to access the data within the app (eg the log-in credentials for the app) and nothing else? Am I correct here? How do I find out if there are other apps which also have this permission? And if there are any other apps, are they able to access any other data of my Google Account? Apps can access your data according to their capabilities. When you install an app it will prompt you to confirm the app's capabilities. To find out what kind of data an app has access to, you can enter the app's name in google play and see the app's description. You can also remove apps from your android device by entering the app's name in google play.
