What a great tradition this is! Our firstborn grandchild. The family members come from several parts of the world to spend a weekend celebrating "the big day." There is always anticipation about what the future might bring for our family, especially if there is a boy, who then becomes the patriarch. As women we learn to prepare the foods and clothing appropriate for such an event. And for some reason, the "male tradition" continues and it makes for many fun occasions.

Our baby granddaughter was the first to experience one of these events, held in a hotel in Ottawa, Canada, the family gathering for the festivities. It was the name of the beloved of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) -may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him- that is used to indicate a female. The use of the word kamila (Arabic:, meaning "girl") to refer to a woman in the Quran appears to be from before the Prophet Muhammad's time. The earliest example that we have of its use is the following statement of Abu Ishaq al-Huqayqn: A woman called Umm Khizir bint Qays, the sister of Sa'd bint Al-Najjar, was being whipped for her adultery. She was called kamila. I saw the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) say: "The whip will not break the kamila's will until it has broken that of another." (Muslim)
