What to search on the dark web?
With all of the new features on the dark web and hidden services coming out recently it can be hard to know what to search for.
Below we give a few pointers of what you may want to search for.
What is a hidden service? As this site was built as an experiment into what to search on the dark net, we are looking for a few more things. A dark web based hidden service needs to support searching for some of the darker topics. We don't expect it to have everything from child pornography to assassination, but it is good to have support for searches for some. If you find that your browser won't search with the terms you would like, this means that you do not have access to those searches.
It is not really a problem that search terms need to have support for, there are tools to convert regular keywords to TOR names. However some people believe that these tools might use other words that you could use. Therefore, in addition to finding a new keyword to search for, it might be worth trying to run the keyword in a website that you have access to. This way it is an entirely different browser.
Other websites that people could have access to could offer the same things or more. If you try a new dark web search engine and get no results, but one of your sites does then you know that the results have been taken out.
Hidden Services - Where Do They Come From? When thinking about what to search for on the dark web, hidden services (also called anonymity services) are often the first questions that people ask. There is a lot of interest in hidden services, why is this? What is anonymous service and how does it work? An anonymous service is one where when a user connects to the site the IP address is hidden from the web server and visitors are only identified by a TOR name. This will normally be a domain or subdomain of another domain. If you go to a website and it says Hi I'm bob then you know that bob is a visitor. However, if you have your own subdomain of a website, the site owner won't know who you are and you wouldn't know that bob visited their page. Hidden services allow users to remain anonymous without any help from either the website owner or outside forces.
What are hidden services on Tor?
What hidden services are, what features they offer and when to use them.
Overview. We'll quickly review how Tor works, what it can be used for and why you should use it. We'll see how to use the command line interface of Tor, will take a look at some of the default locations and then we'll dive into the hidden services. Hidden services are services that are only reachable by people inside your Tor network via Tor's anonymous connections. When you use the Tor browser and start up the web browser you use the browser built into Tor not a web browser located elsewhere. Similarly, when you use a hidden service, only other users of the same hidden service (and possibly nobody outside the Tor network) can access the information on your disk/site. A few examples of hidden services are onion message boards, darknet markets, and file sharing, although there are many others available.
Tor Overview. The easiest way to explain Tor is to give an example with a chat application. If you have an account on a chat app like WhatsApp, the chat history is stored locally on the device. For example, once someone has sent you a message, WhatsApp will create a file named: msg12345 in your /sdcard/.whatsapp directory. That file is a very straightforward text file, just like an email or an SMS, and it's just text that you can view and search inside it. Now, if you do use WhatsApp on mobile, you also have to login to it. And the phone would remember your login credentials to make it a bit more convenient to login every time you want to send a message. However, once you're on the platform and your device decides to connect to the internet, the privacy of your data is gone because you are connecting to a public Wi-Fi or something else you'd like to keep secret. So if you didn't want anyone to know that you were talking to a friend, you could have changed the credentials to only known people. You can do this in WhatsApp and other messaging apps by searching for the word secret and replacing it with the name of the person you want to chat with.
