As a student of history, the issue of the size of traditional Nigerian ethnic kingdoms (a form of Nigerian federalism prior to the coming into force of the 1961 Constitution) is a difficult one. It is a subject of intense discussion among the Yoruba ethnic intelligentsia, especially, but not exclusively, among people of Yoruba background. This article sets out to address this controversy and, hopefully, dispel some common misconceptions that arise from it. It does so by arguing for a theory that has never been given serious consideration in academic Yoruba circles.

To begin with, it is necessary to make certain distinctions about who the Ooni of Ife really is. To begin with, there are two types of Ooni: the legitimate ruler and the unelected regent. Legitimate rulership of the kingdom falls to men of the royal bloodline while regency (unlawful or otherwise) falls to all descendants of an ailing Ooni.e. The illegitimate and regent Oonis are often the only visible leadership in their communities. They do not command respect from their subjects; therefore, they don't deserve it. In fact, they usually become a focus of the anger and frustration of many members of the public. Yet they serve as caretakers of both the kingdom and, more importantly, the line of those who are to occupy the throne. Their role is not simply to serve. They are also expected to provide leadership and guidance to the people who must live under the shadow of Yoruba kings and queens.

The legitimate Ooni must first obtain recognition of his birthright. His claim to the title does not rest on any law, custom or form of government at any time. It must be established through the testimony of elders of great importance to the family and its immediate successors as well as other respected persons who might attest to the Ooni's legitimacy.

Once recognition is accorded, the Ooni is crowned the true sovereign of his kingdom by a process of acclamation that must be confirmed through popular vote. By the laws of the kingdom, every member of the royal line holds the right of succession to the throne and is automatically declared to be the rightful heir.

If there is no male heir to a royal family, then either of two things can happen: either an elder brother is recognized or a child of a senior female relative is anointed. The anointment is not a coronation.

Can I use store-bought pizza dough in my Ooni?

I just bought a Ooni, and have been told that if I want to use store-bought pizza dough in my Ooni I need to pre-mix it. Can I do this without any mixing? If not, what kind of machine can I use to mix it? Thanks!

Yes, you can use store bought pizza dough in your Ooni.e. If you are using a convection oven (which I don't see from the pictures) just pre-mix it in the Ooni's food compartment. Once mixed it will be ready to use.

I'm not sure what kind of machine you have but if you can do the following without pre-mixing: place the dough onto the preheated oven shelves, let the machine keep it warm until needed. Remove the dough with your hands and drop it into the machine. Put in your ingredients, turn on the machine, and select your oven type and temperature. When done, remove your food and serve it. You can use store-bought pizza dough in your Ooni, but for best results I would recommend making it in your Ooni.e. Pre-mixing takes about a minute, and it is actually quicker than mixing it in your oven. We've found that mixing it in the Ooni results in much better crusts.

That said, you can certainly do it, but the finished crust will not be as even as one made by mixing it in the Ooni.e. There may be a bit more crumbly than a mixing in your oven. I think that is what I like about the pre-mix. Also, if you are putting cheese, pepperoni, etc., on top of the crust, it won't stick as well. If you put them on top of the mixing, they'll slide right off when you pull the Ooni out.

Is it worth getting an Ooni?

A friend of mine has been trying to get one for his dad who has terminal cancer and a wife who is terminally ill.

If the Ooni is just for the spiritual side of things, I would say yes. The ceremony is not very expensive if you live outside of Nigeria. The blessing will be held in Abeokuta so it will be an all day affair.

But if you plan to get a Ooni because it will also improve your business, then it will probably not be worth the money. As others have said, you will need a lot of luck and you may only get one chance to get it done. If you are going to go through all the trouble of making the Ooni, you could better off just praying. Even if you do get one of the few available Ooni's, you will only be able to do business with Nigerian banks and even then it will be difficult.

Ooni is just a title. To become a Ooni, you must have some degree of competence in at least some areas, ie., religion, politics, economics, law, medicine, farming, etc.

AO was a title given to one of the first Oba's, by one of the first European rulers, and was used on that ruler's coins. It was later dropped when the Oba's began printing their own coins. AO was also used as a title for some of the last Oba's before they were succeeded.

To become an OONI, you must have certain degree of competence in at least some areas. The degree of competence depends upon the Oba's wishes. This is why there are many Ooni's today.

The Ooni of Ife is one of the best known of all Ooni's, because of the size of Ife, and because he was not just an "obasatun". The story goes that Oyo was a village king and became an Ooni when he learned how to read and write. Oyo had many followers who were called the Oyonigbo, and the Oyo Ooni is the "king" of the Oyonigbo clan.
