It's in this thread that I saw it mentioned that moderators can comment on a parents thread but don't have to. I don't know if this is true but I only ever saw it mentioned in that thread. I also didn't know think it was even possible.

Does the moderator marking the question as duplicate automatically mark it as duplicate on the parent thread or is that something a moderator can do if there's a need? I noticed that when I was an active mod here I had to check 5 posts when I saw one I wanted to close as a duplicate, but now I don't have the option of marking the duplicate there either. Is there something wrong with one of the parent threads? I think a mod also can at any time mark it as dup, but if not, then regular users cannot. This has been my experience.

I had previously thought that of the moderators could mark a question as a duplicate, the top active moderators would have that ability. I also thought that you had to be a moderator to mark a question as a duplicate. If those are wrong then I apologize.

Can a mod mark a duplicate in the main thread if you have privileges that make moderator the one to do it. I was never allowed to, it was a moderator only task.
