Will watching French TV help me learn French?

In some ways, the answer is yes. And in others, no.

But in the past few years, the evidence has piled up, and the consensus has become clear: watching TV in a foreign language can help you learn and retain words and phrases that you wouldn't pick up just by speaking. You probably already have an idea of where the show comes from, and what the language of the show is. But even if the show is a movie, there's a lot to know.

"Knowing the country where the show takes place helps you get a sense of the language," Pesin says. "If you live in the US, for instance, you'd probably notice the way the actors speak would be different if the show took place in Paris."

If the show is set in France, however, you'd know not to expect any particular accent in the French dialogue. It's also a good idea to look for subtitles if the dialogue isn't in English. This will let you know which words are important and which aren't.

Follow the plot. It's easier than you might think to pick up on the gist of what's happening in a television show.

Can you learn French by watching Netflix?

No, not really.

But even if you're a big fan of Netflix and binge-watching, there's one thing that's just for France - the language. The Netflix original French dub version is good, but nothing compared to the original version. So if you want to know the difference between 'I'm hungry' and 'Je suis faim', here's the difference.

As a beginner. I would say French pronunciation can be mastered through Netflix before any other course as it covers many forms of French including regional pronunciation. It's a great way to become familiar with French before learning more formal French courses. However, Netflix cannot teach you French grammar or vocabulary, so you need to learn them after, through other ways.

If you are French yourself, then you would agree that it's very difficult to listen to foreign language audio in foreign land. So, if you want to learn French in real life, make sure you visit French speaking country for practicing, which will allow you to improve your language skills gradually.

If you're not familiar with pronunciation, Netflix audio can help you understand a lot, so it's great for beginners. For more advanced learners, Netflix audio might not be the best alternative. They might sound too good at first, but their pronunciation eventually becomes worse than an actual French speaker.

For real French speaking countries. If you are serious about improving your French, then you should focus on a language course while not forgetting to practice French as well. If you are already able to understand what's said without paying attention to the words, then start learning French words, phrases and sentences through Netflix audio.

As a foreign student. If you're currently studying French at school or college and have started hearing French outside of school, then Netflix will definitely be helpful to you! Even if you're not getting enough opportunities to practice, Netflix will bring you closer to those opportunities that you might have missed out on, without having to travel. The whole idea of streaming your own television series might just be amazing foreigners who have come all the way to France to learn French and enjoy the culture. It would be a great way to get immersed into the French culture while they're here.

Is Lupin a good show to learn French?

If it makes you feel any better, the only 'learning' part of this show is listening to the lyrics on the CDs while the subtitles flash on the screen. I know this because I made a point of going on some actual dates with my ex and her friends. You should do the same. In Japanese. For a few months.

The last time I attempted to learn French was about 8 years ago when I had to attend some language training at school. It went fineish - I think I got the basics, but by the end of it I couldn't tell what a menu even looked like.

The French-speaking people in this show were great; they did what I did with the menus - they just talked at me and tried to make me understand. They were funny, but they kept putting those little jokes into every sentence. Like the one about the French being more beautiful than their own people.

You guys are worse. The French actually said that at me more than once! It was a good show to learn French because it had really pretty characters, a cool setting, and nice music. This is true, and it's also true of Lupin. It's one of my favourite animes of all time. It probably is one of yours too, don't you think? And if I'm honest I have to admit that I do actually prefer Lupin over Death Note too. But the reason that Death Note is my absolute favourite is because it's dark - I find that I can watch scary things and just be scared straight. And if I'm honest I'm not scared of just straight Death Note (ok maybe once) but if I watch something with a bit of horror in then I can stand to be frightened - even by something as silly as what was happening to Lupin and the gang. It really is a different kettle of fish.

I mean just look at all these cute Lupins. Cute isn't scary but its a good start to me making myself feel better.

Is there any French series on Netflix?

I've been following the French TV series in question, but I'm not getting into it.

But is there any available for streaming? There was a few seasons available, but the Netflix service was removed. And the series are on Amazon Prime now, as well.

Are there any more recently produced series that would be of interest? The ones that I have seen on Amazon are all pretty far back. 1 Answer.
La famille Thibault (Thibault's Family) has 6 seasons, the first 4 of which are available in English on Amazon and with English subtitles, the last 2 of which are available only in French. The current season is about to end and I believe Season 5 will be released on November 29th.

If you are looking for more recent TV-series, the show Enfin un petit 18 ans (Finally, a little one at 18 years) by the French director Guillaume Nicloux started in 2026 and it is still being shown. The first season is about a young man whose mother dies after giving birth to him. His father refuses to raise the baby because he feels he is too young and a mistake and puts him in an orphanage. When he turns 18, he goes to find his father. In the second season he is still living with his father and starts to look for a job and a place to live.

The latest season is about him having a son who is also living in an orphanage. He is trying to understand what happened to his past self. He realizes that he left his son behind and must take care of him.

The theme is loss, love, loneliness, family, friendship, faith, regret and hope. There are also some movies, eg L'enfant sauv (The Saved Child) and Enfants de la rue (Children of the street) by the French director Michel Ponsot.
