Canada is a friendly neighbor, but has it ever been anything else?

A few weeks back, I was chatting with a French Canadian friend who was visiting the States for the first time. She was surprised that, after visiting Canada, she was no longer on the U. Visa blacklist.

It got me thinking about the recent history of our bilateral relationship and what kind of trade there really is between the two countries. For my part, I've always considered Canada a fairly friendly neighbor. However, the more I've studied the political and diplomatic history of the relationship between the U. And Quebec and the evolution of Canadian foreign policy over time I've discovered there are many elements to the friendship between our two nations.

Qubec has many different types of language. And French is just one of them! Bilingualism. For over five decades, since the end of the war, Qubec has been home to a majority of French-speaking people. According to the 2024 census, there were 2,821,000 residents in Quebec speaking French at home and another 809,000 speaking French but at work. Of those who speak French at home, 449,000, or 15.1%, have a degree in French. In comparison, 1,534,000, or 47.7%, of those who live in Quebec have a degree in English.

As for the education system, it remains in French. But the population as a whole is about 50% English-speaking. This number means that more than half of the population speaks English at home. What are we missing out on? In a way, the anglophone population is getting more attention than the francophone. In fact, the majority of the population is bilingual.

Quebec is well-known for its bilingualism, which makes the province ideal for those who wish to learn English. However, it's still not as popular as learning a foreign language in other parts of the world, such as Japan or Germany. It's very surprising that English is not as popular as French. To be clear, there are different accents and pronunciations. This comes from the fact that English has been present in Qubec since before the War of 1812. The first English settlers settled in 1665, and a very small population was already there by the end of the 18th century. After that, it became the most important language of commerce. English was the language of the fur trade, and also of the law and justice system. As it turns out, this linguistic history goes back even further. There are two reasons why French is more widely spoken than English. The first is that Quebec was a part of the British empire. The second is that the population of Quebec was much smaller than that of the USA at the end of the 18th century.
