Can Surfshark bypass YouTube TV?
Is Surfshark bypassing YouTube TV?
That was the question I asked after being in a discussion with one of my customers. It turns out that Surfshark was bypassing YouTube TV because my customer wanted to watch their favorite shows and movies on YouTube TV, but they were not able to do so since Surfshark did not provide it.
Now, if you're wondering how Surfshark bypasses YouTube TV, let's quickly get some important things out of the way: In our latest study, we saw that the majority of you (65.8%) were watching YouTube TV via Chromecast. We know that this is most likely because you are using a laptop, which is also a likely place to connect your Chromecast.
Of those who were connected via Roku, Roku 2, Roku 3, Roku 4, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, or iOS TV apps, only 16.8% connected to YouTube TV. This number might be much higher if we included people who connected to their devices through their mobile phones.
Surfshark worked a bit differently. It enabled an option in the Connections tab of your app to use a proxy to access the Internet.
As the video above shows, you can choose between a VPN, which helps with privacy, proxies which might be able to bypass certain blocks, or just have Surfshark forward your traffic to your device. As you can see from the screenshots above, there is an option to select a proxy, but the first two will just take you to the YouTube TV website. So, how does Surfshark bypass YouTube TV? Let me show you a bit more in-depth in our study report, but here's what we can tell you about YouTube TV as a service so far. You are not forced to log in. Surfshark doesn't require you to sign into YouTube TV to access your content. It just opens up your browser and puts it on the same network as the proxy. This means that Surfshark works just like an ad-blocker when it comes to preventing you from logging in, since you still get a video playing without having to type in your username and password.
It works for streaming videos. The proxy is not limited to accessing websites and searching for content; it works for streaming videos.

Why is Surfshark blocking everything?
If you've had to change your hosts file at all, it may be that Surfshark is blocking all traffic from the old ip address and not your new ip address.
The only way to check for this is to have an online source in the same location where it used to be and see what it shows. It will almost definitely show nothing when going to an old ip address and will show all when it's the new ip address.
Does Surfshark block YouTube?
I have a hard time understanding how surfshark could possibly block YouTube.
YouTube is all over the place, from the smallest to the largest computers, and most places just stream the actual YouTube videos for bandwidth issues, but yet surfshark blocks it all. How could it even do that? I have to turn on youtube just so I can see my cat, how can they even block it?
I think we need to get more information about this, this is really quite funny. If you are not interested in the fact that there are many ways to get the streams directly into your computer (it will be explained) check out here: And with regard to your post "how can they even block it": well they don't; just like Youtube can download the video from their website and display it through their flash player, which can render youtube videos to an mpeg4 format or other. And yes, some people stream the video that's hosted by youtube directly from youtube so youtube doesn't get the bandwidth. It's quite possible the client or server used for Surfshark are doing the same.
But as I said, check out my post to find out what I mean. You should ask them to make a FAQ/help article. They say something about disabling flash but I haven't found a place to disable it so far.
A couple of things you should be aware of: 1) Surfshark isn't the only one blocking youtube. Every few months, others come up with different ways of preventing it. 2) youtube makes it very easy to get videos directly into your computer. It could be done any number of ways, but you can use any number of sites for it. 3) If you're going to download the video, make sure you're doing it to save it to a computer. The video files downloaded direct from youtube (the direct link) are usually large, and are intended for quick watching. If you save them to a file on your computer, they are typically pretty large. And while you can play these videos on your computer, you would have to re-download them if you want to watch them at a later time.
It's really impossible for them to block youtube when youtube's video is in a simple stream mode. As you might have noticed, the "big" servers at youtube are actually the ones that are streaming your cat's kitty videos.
