Do iPhone hotspots have IP addresses?
For those who don't know, a hotspot is simply a device that connects to the internet wirelessly via a 3G or 4G modem.
It's very easy to set up and can be used with a computer, iPad or iPhone (for example).
A lot of these hotspots use an IP address. You can connect to your internet from an iPhone as long as you have an IP address for that location. But where do you get that IP address? How can you find out?
IP addresses and the IP address range. To understand how the IP addresses are assigned, it helps to first understand how IP addresses work. If you've never used an IP address before, you can think of it as a unique address for your computer on the internet. You'll have an IP address assigned by your router when you plug it in to the internet.
If your laptop has two wireless cards, both cards would have two IP addresses. So if you had two laptops, they would each have two IP addresses, each one with a specific range. One IP address would be 192.168.x for example, another IP address would be 192. The IP address ranges are separated from each other by one or more zeroes, so for example 192.100 is not the same as 192.
Every computer has an IP address by default, but not every computer can be on the internet. An IP address must be assigned by your ISP, it can only be on a fixed network such as a home network, but not on the internet.
How hotspots work. Many hotspots use a 3G or 4G modem to connect to the internet. Some hotspots use the 3G or 4G network itself. A 3G or 4G network is not always connected to the internet. Your smartphone or tablet can connect to the hotspot via wifi and you can use the internet over a 3G or 4G connection, but you can only access websites that are on the 3G or 4G network itself.
The modem connected to the hotspot is most likely a wired ethernet modem that connects to a router, which then connects to the internet. All the connections are done over a broadband connection, so you get a fixed speed (3G or 4G) connection.

How do I set a static IP address on my iPhone hotspot?
Question.
? My carrier charges too much to have 2 phone numbers, so I would like to have 2 nameservers. Is there a way to set a static IP address on my iPhone hotspot for free? I will list both below.
Method 1: Changing the default name server that is set as part of the router configuration. There are two ways to change the default name servers to use: The default name server for iPhone Hotspots is not actually provided by the Verizon iPhone Hotspot, but instead a name server provided by the carrier. By changing the default name server on the Verizon router, this can be set to your home network settings DNS servers which you want to use as the default.
You can change the DNS servers used by the Verizon router through the Advanced Settings tab. Go to the network tab and scroll to the bottom and click on "Advanced Settings". It will bring you to a screen with several sub tabs. Select "Service Settings" under the Network section. You will see all the various settings about the mobile data connection. The last item on the list is "Default Name Server". Change this value to the DNS servers you would like to be used as the default name server for your hotspot.
Method 2: Changing the name servers manually using a PC or Mac. If you are comfortable messing with the host settings of your router and using a PC or Mac to set your own DNS server and name servers, you can do it easily. To do this we will need to configure your router to use a temporary external name server which will allow us to manage the DNS settings outside of the router.
Step 1: We will begin by adding an external DNS server that is used for a short period of time. Click on the "Advanced Settings" icon at the top left of the window.
Step 4: You will be presented with the "DNS Service Settings" page.
Do mobile hotspots have different IP addresses?
I am currently running a hotspot on my phone.
It has one IP address for all the connections. If I have a laptop plugged into the hotspot and type in www.google.com, it will try to use the phone's IP address as the DNS address for that website.
Is this a problem? Can the user be charged for accessing the internet through a mobile hotspot? There is no difference between the IP address assigned to the hotspot and the IP address assigned to the device itself. The problem you describe is a DNS problem, not a technical one. This happens because DNS servers do not know how to resolve the domain name to the correct IP address, so they try the closest available server and it happens to be your mobile hotspot, which is why the www.com page seems to be slow to respond or fail to load at all.
To fix this, the easiest thing to do is to setup the DNS on the hotspot (eg OpenDNS). Alternatively, you can edit /etc/hosts and add the following lines to the top of the file: 1 www.com 2 www.facebook.3 www.youtube.
The reason for this is that the IP address 10.1 is not unique to the hotspot. It could be the IP address assigned to the wifi card, the IP address assigned to the laptop connected to the hotspot or any other IP address assigned to any device connected to the hotspot.
This will stop the DNS resolution from being sent to your mobile hotspot, but you will still need to edit the hosts file on your computer.
