Can you use Mullvad for free?

The issue with them is that they don't have Android apps. This means that they will never get the support the mobile apps get, for example they lack a chat client, or maybe even an in-browser VPN service. With Google Play, all app developers are bound to make their app available for everybody. With Mullvad and its low market share, it wouldn't be surprising if that won't happen.

This is kind of important because the mobile version of Mullvad is completely different from their desktop and Android version. Mobile users need a mobile version that actually works, they won't go out of their way to use an Android mobile version just to try it out.

Anyway, I'm not against them focusing on Android instead of Linux or macOS or any other OS. I also see that Linux and other distributions are becoming more popular. Maybe a new generation of mobile users will grow up liking Mullvad better than the older generation of Mullvad users? But we shouldn't limit ourselves that much. The standalone version will install and connect to Mullvad.

What about their web app? They released that as well, but it's really missing something. It just doesn't feel right. It looks great, yet still missing. It's not that the design is bad, yet it feels different. I don't know, because I don't have an Android phone. Maybe, a lot of other users would enjoy the product for this very reason.
