Can I install Microsoft Office on Chromebook?

Can you access Windows on a Chromebook?

The answer is: yes.

This is one of the few situations in which Chrome OS is compatible with Windows, and you can use your Windows programs on a Chromebook just as you would on any other computer.

Of course, Windows on a Chromebook requires you to be on the interneteither via Wi-Fi or cellular datato use some of the programs you'd use with Windows, such as Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Office. If you need a program that's only available on Windows, however, there's a workaround.

How Windows works on a Chromebook. The basic idea is simple. You launch a program on a Windows computer, and it automatically starts on your Chromebook. That's all. There are some caveats, though.

For starters, a Chromebook needs a lot less space to run a full version of Windows than a traditional Windows computer does. The reason: Chromebooks use an ARM processor instead of a standard Intel x86 chip.

"I have Windows 10 installed on a Chromebook, and it fits in the memory of my Chromebook perfectly," writes user K. On the Chrome OS forum. "It has been running for over six months now without a problem."

If you can fit Windows on a Chromebook, you'll need to be on the internet, of course. Since the Chromebook needs to access the internet, you'll need a way to do thatsuch as Wi-Fi or cellular data.

If you need a Windows program that's only available on Windows, however, there's a workaround. You need a Chrome extension. First, let's talk about the extensions that Chrome OS has already built in. Google's own built-in web browserthe Chrome web browserhas a few extensions, including one for opening a browser window in your desktop program. That's a useful little tool if you're, say, using Microsoft's Word program to edit a document.

Other extensions include ones that can open documents in Google Docs or Google Sheets and ones that can open PDFs in the PDF viewer. You can find those extensions in the Chrome store.

These extensions are useful if you want to launch a web browser in your desktop program, open documents from cloud-based services, or view a PDF. They won't work, however, for launching an application from a Windows desktop program.
