What does Chromebook use instead of Microsoft Office?
The fact that you can install and run apps on your Chromebook means that you're no longer limited to office productivity apps on your Mac or PC.
For this reason, Google's goal is to make Chromebooks as user-friendly as possible with some killer apps installed right out of the box.
In 2026, we tested Chromebooks and found that when it comes to productivity and entertainment, Google-owned products were better than Google-compatible Windows apps. And they are so much better when they do come with Microsoft Office preinstalled, such as Google Docs. With that said, Microsoft actually has a strong relationship with Google over Docs and it will likely continue having one until Microsoft's new office suites are fully launched.
The key question is, how easy is it to switch between using Office apps and Google Docs apps for documents? Here we'll compare the two major programs. Let's get started.
Before getting to it, if you haven't already done so, let's cover some of the basics before getting to specific points about the differences in the two platforms. First up is a brief tutorial on installing Google's suite office productivity apps. These apps are called "Google Cloud Drive apps."
Installing Google's Office apps on a Chromebook. Here's what you need. Download Chrome OS version 60. Before you begin, make sure you have enough space to store files by setting up an external drive. Chrome OS doesn't auto-detect external hard drives. You'll be prompted to connect external storage devices at the end of the process. In the steps that follow, these are optional options and they aren't required. You do need to use a connected drive, however, in order for the apps to function properly. You can download the Google Cloud apps via the Google Play Store and sideload them into Chrome OS. This can be done by downloading and installing the app from the Google Play Store on your device and then installing it on Chrome OS. You also need either a 1- or 2GB USB thumb drive, depending on which Android tablet or phone you're running on. For those with a new Pixel phone, you can opt for a 2GB USB thumb drive. With USB thumb drives and Android 4.4 KitKat's USB host mode, you can also share the drive on your Pixel phone to other Android devices over USB. Open the app you want to install on your Chromebook and sign into Google by connecting your Chromebook to your WiFi.
How do I get Microsoft for free on my Chromebook?
Microsoft is now offering 100GB of free storage for one year to all of its Office 365 customers, including Office 365 Home, and Office 365 University.
This offer comes just in time for when many businesses plan to move their offices to a more open and collaborative way of working. The company is also releasing a free version of their Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint software to all users of Chromebooks. As a result, Microsoft now owns over 50% of the tablet market.
This free offer gives me the opportunity to get back into the Microsoft ecosystem which I haven't used in over two years. The big question is, Why don't I use Windows anymore? My reasoning. The first major reason I moved away from Microsoft was the lack of hardware. The only real computers I own are my two desktop computers and one laptop. My laptop does everything for me, and while it is nice to take it everywhere, it is a pain in the neck having to connect it to every device in order to do work. All of my work is done on my computers (desktop and laptop). Even this article was written on my desktop. I am typing this blog post using my Android tablet. My phone is charging in my backpack.
Having to sync every device to do work (and to keep track of it) is an overhead that most people don't even realize is there. I have tried to make it less painful for myself by doing some work on my tablet, but every time I sit down to write on my computer, I have to open it up again. I have to go back and sync my notes with OneNote (if that is what you use). I have to switch back and forth between windows trying to get started. I then have to close everything to work on my laptop. This cycle goes on for everything I do.
The second reason I don't use Windows anymore is that I believe my life is more important than some window-centric workflow. Windows is fine. But what if Windows gets hacked and all my documents are at risk? What if I want to use my favorite browser (Firefox) and can't install it? What if I want to run my games on my Android device and can't install Steam or Origin? What if I want to print a document but don't have the right printer?
Why can't I download Microsoft Word on my Chromebook?
I have a Google Pixelbook and would like to download the Office apps, as I always do on my Windows laptop.
When I go to the Google Play store on my Chromebook, there is no option for downloading Microsoft Word or Excel, only Google apps such as Gmail. Can someone please tell me how to download these Office apps? Thank you!
Google Play Store for Chrome OS. Hi and thanks for your reply, but I'm unable to get the "Google Play Store for Chrome OS" option to appear in the context menu. If I click the "Start" button in Chrome, then click on a Google URL, the "Google Play Store for Chrome OS" option is available, but not when I click on a Google URL. This is the same for any app that I try and install. I cannot find out why I cannot install MS Office on my Chromebook! Can you help?
Microsoft Office on ChromeOS. I did some research about this issue and also made an inquiry via Microsoft support, they said it's not supported on the Google Chromebook, yet they told me to create a new profile (I can't even do that, because if I try and make a new one, I get "The system is running in a low power mode and the action you requested could not be completed"). I'm beginning to think that Google does not want to allow Chrome users to use the Microsoft Office. This really hurts because I have used MS Office and love it.
Chrome OS is a very limited operating system and only offers limited functionality, however that is a good thing because it makes Chromebooks much more affordable. Even though they are very affordable, some users still buy them just because they like the operating system.
We really can't make any promises as to whether or not Microsoft Office will ever be available on Chrome OS, so we can't guarantee that you can use it. I wish I had better news to share with you, but unfortunately, you're just out of luck.
Microsoft Office on Chromebook? Hi everyone, I am looking for a way to use office 2026 with a touch screen. I have a chromebook g1 10. I would like to know if it is possible to install a full version of Microsoft office on my chromebook, because it will be my first time to use it.
Can I put Microsoft Office on a Chromebook?
QuestionI have a Acer Chromebook running the Linux OS.
I also have a Microsoft Office 365 subscription to work from home. Can I use the office program for Linux?
AnswerI do not believe that the Office for Linux will work on the Linux-based Chromebook. Please note that this is a web-based application and the Linux operating system does not have all of the applications that are available for Windows.
I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble running Office on your Chromebook. I'm happy to help, but I need to know exactly what you are trying to do. Is this a Chromebook or a Chromebox (or other form factor)?
In addition to the Chromebook itself, can you tell me what OS you are running? Are you running a 32-bit or 64-bit version? If you could provide a little more detail, I would be happy to help. AnswerIn your case, it sounds like you are trying to run Office on a Chromebook. You might be interested in our recent post about running Office on a Chromebook.
Chromebooks are not running the full version of Windows. They are running a light version of Windows designed for smaller devices. Because of this, there is not always a full set of applications available. For example, there is not always an option to run Excel. There may be an option to run Excel Online, which will allow you to access Excel files online. Office Online will work, but you will not be able to install any applications. If you were to attempt to install Office on a Chromebook, there would be no way to remove it once it was installed.
The only way that you would be able to use Office on a Chromebook is if you were to run a 32-bit version of Windows. We do not recommend using the 32-bit version of Windows on a Chromebook. It would likely result in unstable operation.
It sounds like you are running the 64-bit version of Windows.
