What ports need to be open for SoftEther?
If you want to install SoftEther VPN on a Debian based system then you need to open the following ports: TCP: 5500 (for both servers). UDP: 4500 (for both servers). You also need to make sure that the firewall can allow traffic on these ports.
You can see all the ports that need to be open for the two SoftEther servers in the documentation. You need to make sure that you have the rights to configure the firewall, if the firewall is not configure correctly then the VPN will not be able to run. Also, if you want to run the SoftEther servers on a remote machine then you need to ensure that all traffic is going through VPN and you need to configure the firewall accordingly. There is a brief description of how to configure the firewall in the installation guide for the SoftEther VPN product.
What port does SoftEther use?
Unlike a true VPN, SoftEther has a built-in HTTP/FTP/SMTP server on the local computer for user convenience. The file sharing functions are also built into the software.
How does it work? You can use both OpenVPN and SoftEther protocols and L2TP/IPSec VPN for IPsec VPN respectively. With their respective encryption, the client will establish connections to the server you set up and with the passwords you assign to the servers.
Is it safe? Yes, it is extremely safe. It is a VPN software, not a remote desktop software. It is designed to encrypt the data between the client computer and the VPN server. Simply put, it is not for remote desktop or other security needs.
Included are SSH functions for you to remotely access the server and perform configuration for you as well as remote management. You can also use the built-in VPN tunnel to connect to the internet anonymously.
What is it good for? If you are a PC user, you can use it not only to access your home network remotely but also to remote desktop to your home PC. This can be done from different locations like your office, your friend's house or even some public computers.
It also allows you to access your home network remotely, which means you can access your files, printers, pictures, documents, etc. From anywhere, even from public computers, without fear of being tracked and monitored by others.
It is also very convenient because with Secure Shell you can also access your home PC or server from anywhere, and you can have various applications running even though they are not connected over the Internet. This is called remote desktop and it is described below.
What is a virtual private network? Using a VPN, you can create a tunnel between your PC and the remote VPN server so that the data you send to the remote VPN server can be encrypted. Each time you send data to the remote server, it will use the encryption to protect the data as it passes through the tunnel.
What is a VPN server? A VPN server is the software on the remote server that performs the encryption tunneling for you. In other words, the server is the VPN server and the client is the VPN client. The VPN server will provide a secure tunnel to allow the client to send and receive data.
