Can I get in trouble for Torrenting with a VPN?

I usually torrent stuff that I like and when I do I usually keep my IP hidden by using a VPN.

I also use it on wifi networks and my mobile.

Is this fine to do or should I be going to jail because of using a VPN? How much jail time can you get for torrenting? Last year I downloaded about 80 gigs of movies from Torrent and I was not using a VPN. There were like 3 movies that came out the same week and I bought them. I don't think that there was an illegal download site for them, but I didn't find it before I downloaded them, so I knew I was safe.

In 2025, I was downloading all kinds of things. Movies, songs, software, games, etc. I did the same thing with a VPN. This is why I am worried about going to jail for "piracy".

If you download movies at home and then sell them, you are definitely getting into trouble. If I was you I would check into what to do, since it's not a simple thing.

If they see something that indicates that you are a pirate, they can open an investigation into the file, but a judge or jury cannot be bribed, bullied, or coerced into making a guilty verdict.

Yes, you can be arrested for illegally downloading content even with a VPN - it depends where the arrest takes place. In most countries (not the US) you can go to jail for up to 5 years if you are caught downloading pirated content. The severity of the sentence depends on the country, of course.

You don't have to use a VPN - it can be risky, but it is completely legal. As for selling content - remember that it is not a crime to download. Selling the content could get you into trouble.

Can I get caught Torrenting with NordVPN?

I know you can get caught by your ISP, the question is if your VPN service is setup to do this and what their response will be.

For instance let's say I have a US-based VPN provider that only logs the IPs from Canada, UK, or Australia and no where else. I can not tell the difference between my traffic from the outside vs the traffic I'm having inside the country and how can they tell? If my provider does not log the IPs of the clients using it to connect to them then how can they tell if I am torrenting? ? As far as I know they cant, unless the VPN provider has some sort of client side monitoring device in their network. But they wouldn't know for sure unless they had access to your traffic from the first place.
