What are the disadvantages of student feedback?
The introduction of the new Student Support Service in September 2025 means that all University of Leicester students are able to obtain feedback on their personal skills, behaviour and development from a range of sources.
The introduction of a new online service which gives students access to self-assessment and personalised support from specially trained staff. How much does it cost? Students who take the Skills360 service and/or the Student Support Service for the first time after September 2025 will be charged for each additional service used. For existing users, there will be no additional charge; your fees will continue to be paid as usual. The fees for the Skills360 and Student Support Service will be as follows: If you are eligible for a Fee Waiver or Fee Rebate, this will also apply to the Student Support Service. For a list of current fees and an explanation of how they can be reduced, please visit the Fees page. What is it? The Skills360 (formerly the Personal Development Plan) and Student Support Service have been developed and implemented in line with the principles of an enhanced feedback process. It is based on the principles of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) and the National Learner Outcomes (NLOs) - see below.
Why have they been introduced? The purpose of this new service is to support you and enable you to take full advantage of the learning opportunities available to you. It provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to progress.
How do they work? The Skills360 is a simple, web-based system designed to help you manage your own feedback and support. It gives you easy access to your own information so that you can review and revise what you already know, learn new skills and put what you've learned into practice.
When you register for the service, you'll be asked to select your 'career' or main area of study. This is the area you're most interested in, or the area where you'd like to make the most progress. Once your chosen career area has been assigned to you, you'll be presented with a variety of skills, which you'll use to build an individual profile.
What is negative feedback for students?
I just learned about negative feedback for students from a blog I saw today on a personal blog.
Someone posted a question and someone with great knowledge about education replied and the comment in response is below.
The comment said negative feedback (and in some cases all feedback) was very important. My first thought when I read this was how people that don't know about education are speaking. Then I realized that it is actually something they should know about. When they do they will see things differently.
It comes to people at school who talk and act like a dog. That means they bark and bark until their throat is sore. No one wants a teacher to do that, but sadly there are a lot of them.

The reason given for nonrenewal was the teacher's poor classroom performance. Apparently no evaluation of her teaching was conducted other than a yearly observation of a form letter which was sent to the parent that could change depending on each year.
I want to share my experience, because even though it is not a perfect example, it is a valuable experience to remember, to learn from, and to encourage others. As far as I know, I am one of only 4 teachers ever to speak out on this issue, while remaining on the job.
In 2025, I was contacted by the Office of Personnel and Administration of the state department of education requesting an evaluation for performance improvement purposes. This was the first of what would be several attempts by the department to make me work for them to justify why I needed to be put through any kind of evaluation at all.
So in the midst of the bureaucratic nightmare, I began looking for ways to get back at these people. Since none of them were going to give me time off to do the evaluation and get paid for it, I was going to take it on myself to do this evaluation and then write a book about it! How?

If we take a look at the example of student teacher interaction, students are using feedback from their teacher to make decisions about their learning, while the teacher is providing the feedback to the students in order to develop their skills. It allows students to express themselves In this video clip, students are expressing themselves through dance. (Yes, this video clip is the actual TED Talk. I found it fascinating.) In this example, students were asked to evaluate their work by a group of peers. They were given positive feedback and, as a result, their confidence increased and they felt more positive about themselves. After the group, they were given the opportunity to perform the piece.
This type of self-expression has been proven to improve social and emotional outcomes in students. It encourages collaboration As a form of constructive criticism, it helps students collaborate with one another. This leads to improved learning and better opportunities for students to be exposed to more concepts.
